Soft Brakes, Low Pedal

Hope you are not sick and tired of brake questions :jester:

96 K1500 4X4, anti-lock, 5.7

Spongy, soft brake pedal. new rotors, pads, rears look fine. Wheels bled.

Question: does the master cylinder contain a check valve/valves?

When I press on the brake pedal, I see violent requrgitation or agitation in the master cylinder.

If the reservoir cover is off when I hit the brake pedal, my engine compartment gets a bath!

Thanks,

Rick

To wrap this up:

After finding master cylinder testing ideas with web search, I determined this is normal and not internal bypassing. brakes are fine and pedal is solid once it drops far enough(gas pedal level) to stop recirc thru compensation(?) valves. Just normal Chitty Chebby brakes!

Pedal on those trucks was never rock solid but the brakes worked fine. You'd figure they would have changed that over the years... but it took a long time. Pedal feel on the 05 and newer trucks is substantially better.

Glad you got it figured out. I didn't see your post until today.

+1, and I hate the ABS. I'd rather do it the old fashion way of taking it out of gear so there is now power to the rear wheels. I never had trouble stopping doing that. Glad your mind is at ease now. :D

Thanks Guys,

I appreciate the replies!

I'll bet the center of the old chevy brake problem is the master cylinder. I run out of leg before that thing stops gurgling and starts actuating the brakes!!!
