92' TBI startup problem..

My good friend has a 92 GMC Sierra with a newly installed (20,000km) 5.7L TBI.

Recently, it has developed some startup troubles:

It sometimes takes over 20 "cranks" before it'll finally fire (when cranked with the key).

But, there's a catch.  If you use the remote starter (which has been installed since 92) to start the engine, it'll fire first time, everytime.

Does anyone out there have any tips on what we should be looking to repair or replace?

Thanks in advance,

Welcome to the forum, and nice SC.

My guess is the problem lies in the key ignition connection somewhere. There may be a short in the ignition itself. Have you guys checked voltage or anything?

Hopefully someone else will jump in with a better answer.  ???

Could be a bad ignition switch, which is energizing the coil in the "run" position, but not during "crank" position. If you set it to "run" and bump the starter, it starts, but no spark during cranking in the "start" position? I would check to see if there is actual spark occuring when it is cranking and has the no-start condition. I bet if you jumped power to the coil directly, it would start using the key every time. (just to test the theory)

I think it has to be the ignition switch.

The only other variables in that circuit are a neutral safety switch on automatics and clutch switch on manuals, but if either of those were bad, it wouldn't crank the engine at all.

By the way, welcome to the forum and hope this helps you out.                               :sideways:
