New 09 Chevy Towing Advice

I hope im in right area,i have a chevy Xten cab Silverado 09 with tow package 5.3 and 3.73 rear.I am just now hauling a trailer (RV) that weighs app 5000 lbs with all gear and hitch weights. I was driving in tow/haul mode for most of the time driving but going upstate ny alot steep hills and valleys, so i dropped to 3rd gear and drove all the way home in 3rd gear,MY Question is or was it ok to drive in 3rd all that way.I did find i was using alot more gas was that normal as well? I also could tell it was 2500 rpms as opposed to normal 2000.Could me driving in 3rd gear harm my engine or transmission and should i only drive in the tow/haul mode and not Both.On straight runs i had no problem in tow/haul mode except long stretches going up inclines thats why i dropped to 3rd. I know alot in here are drives of trailers and are more experts at this so i value your opinions .I just dont want to be driving in low all time if i dont have too and if tow/haul mode is sufficient .Will tow/haul mode give me better mileage a little i hope lol.Thanks for any help jerry

History lesson, Before overdrive cars & trucks there was and still is 3rd gear 1 to 1 ratio and 3:73 4:11 & 4:56 gear ratios and no it wont hurt to drive in 3rd at 2500-3000 rpm range, only burns more gas.

Leave it in 3rd. OD will cause the tranny to build up a lot of heat and cooler won't be able to keep up. Yes driving in 3rd will use more fuel, but pulling a 5000lb barn is the reason for the fuel consumption. Tow/haul mode raises your shift points, makes it a little easier to get moving if you are in stop and go traffic. I don't use it on the highway when I'm cruising, just around town in traffic, personal choice though. No harm in or out.
