C-2500 Semi Floating Axle?

I have a 1999 (older style) chevy c-2500 reg cab. 2wd. Today i was switching sets of tires and i noticed that the rear axle is a semi-floating axle. The truck has a 8600# gvwr with 6000# rear gawr and 4100# front gawr. It has the 350 w/ 4l80-e trans. Just wondering if anyone can provide me w/ more info on this axle, it has 3.73 gears with a 14 bolt cover and 8 lug wheels. Is this the same 10.5 inch axle as the 14 bolt full float, but just set up differerntly, or is this a totally different axle? really it doesnt matter much to me either way, just wondering what it is.

The semi is a totally different axle. The HD (9200gvw) and up have the full float. The full float is easily identifed with the wheel covers off since you will see an additional 8 bolt bearing cover in the center of the wheel.

It is a 9.5" ring gear and comparable to a Dana 60 in strength. The semi-floating deisgn won't handle weight as good as a full floater but the do handle torque fairly decent. A lot of people get them to upgrad their 8.5" axle in a 1/2 ton truck to handle more power and larger tires. Don't worry, its a good rear. Our one work van has one with over 300,000 very hard miles on it and the rear never gave us a single problem.
