Manifold Bolt Broken... Warranty?

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks,

I have noticed that my truck sounds like there is an exhaust leak when I first start it.... after warming up, the sound goes away.

I looked around the exhaust manifold and noticed that the bolt closest to the firewall on the drivers side is missing. So, assuming the worst, I got a probe and stuck it in the hole... YEP, the bolt is still in there with the head broken off!! :D

Is this a 7/70 warranty item from GM? I am not the original owner.

Thank you,

James

Yeah that is for the OEM Cat and emissions. Problem is whether you can prove it since you are not the original owner.

Thanks for the reply,

I guess I'm screwed because the original owner had an aftermarket exhaust and CATs put on....

So am I looking at paying a mechanic to pull the head and drill the old bolt out? How much money is something like that?

Thanks again for any advice!

you quite possibly are, with these problems it is best if you let a mechanic do it. BUT you can do it yourself (if you have the entire weekend and the proper tools). Realistically, I would say to take some time and do it yourself. even though that is the worst place to have a busted part (in the engine bay), it is doable - if you are willing to spend the time. Cost for a mechanic depends on compentency and time, you could get away with a deal of $250.00 or your could end up spending $1000.00.

Sorry to say it, but yeah, you are somewhat screwed.

Thanks for the feedback.

I took it to my dealer mechanic and he looked at it. Said he's pretty sure he can back the bolt out and replace. (He had just done a 6.0 last week... same bolt in same area) Told me it would be $100 for R&R of the manifold (including new gasket and bolts), and labor for 1 to 1.5 hours. Not too bad as far as I'm concerned.

I would try this myself (have done it on 2 Jeeps in my driveway), but considering where I have to drill, I'm afraid I'll drill too deep and hit the water-jacket and ruin my block. Would rather have dealer do that if it happens so they can buy me a new block!

Thanks again,

Good mechanic can pull the manifold, use a right angle drill and an EZ Out to get the stud out... It works about 75% of the time.

stupid related question: what is the exact size (and dimension) of the manifold bolts???
