Transfer Case Shot

I am very certain that 4x4 should not be used. I have the push button with auto 4x4 which I have had problems with it indiacting which mode it is in. The light doesn't always work. When driving it sounds like there is 2 bolts floating around in the transfer case. When putting it in 4wd it grinds and clunks. I'm guessing it is the transfer case. I changed the fluids in both the front diff and transfer case and it didn't seem like any grindings were drained. How much can I expect this to cost to get fixed? How hard would it be to do it myself?
