4l60e Tranny Temp Gauge

Well i decided i wanted to keep an eye on my transmission so i don't have to replace that any time soon... so i bought a Auto meter 2 1/6" A-Pillar Gauge pod and a Auto meter transmission temp Gauge..

 

i heard you can just use the pressure test port for the temp probe?. does that sound right? on my old truck i used a Tee going into the transmission cooler in the radiatior.but i also had a 700r4 .... so on the newer 4l60e if i can just go into that port it would save a lot of time...plus if i used thread tape and took my time it should be more heavy duty and i wouldnt have to worry about leaks as much...

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but if you can still return the Autometer gauge..................

 

You have a 97, 96+ have OBDII. The easier way to get data visible from your trucks ECM is with a ScanGaugeII with X-Gauge option. Although, maybe someone with a 96-99(classic) and a ScanGaugeII could confirm if the trans temp is available, it is on 99+ trucks.

Your PCM should be keeping an eye on the trans temp anyway. If you bought an electric gauge, you should be able to splice into the wires for the current trans temp sensor and just use that. If you bought a mechanical gauge, you're pretty much going to have to cut a line someplace I would think.

I was in the same position you are in a few years ago due to towing with my Yuk XL. I took the route of an Interceptor Scan Gauge by Aeroforce.Interceptor

 

There are other scan gauges on the market now but it seems these guys may have been first. You will see they are round and can be inserted into the std gauge pod you have. I would rtn the temp gauge you have and go this route if at all possible. You can monitor up to 28 functions including the trans temp and you never have to cut into anything. It simply plugs into your OBDII port and you are ready to go.

 

If you elect to keep what you have. You can use the test port but just know it is not completely accurate. The fluid behind the plug is stagnant (not moving) and for a temp sensor to provide accurate readings, the fluid must be moving.

 

You can tap into a line or drill a hole in your pan but why do it when you can simply plug the Interceptor into you OBD II port?

i got everything installed now..

 

i got a Autometer single Gauge pod for the a-pillar. i got the B&M tranny temp gauge since i dont think theres any difference between auto meter and b&m other than i saved $20 and it looks just as good if not better... i went into the test port and i used thread tape so there were no leaks. wire loomed everything up and used plenty of zip ties.

 

it has not gone over 110 Degrees... im not sure how hot it is supposed to get i have been driving around the city which is why i think it is even getting that hot.. if i was going 70 on the highway all that extra air would keep it much cooler i think.. if i notice it starts to get up over 150 or so normal driving i will be getting a B&M super cooler but just the little skinny one since i never tow. its a stacked plate so it will cool pretty good. i also heard that for every 10 degrees cooler your tranny runs its an extra 15-25,000 miles out of your transmission.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December. 
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal. 
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps. 
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
