Magnetic Drain Plug

Hello. Anyone know if my 2008 Silverado w/ the 5.3L came with a magnetic drain plug? My Vette came with one (although the 2006 models did not) and our Tahoe did not come with one, so there is no rule of thumb to go by. Obviously, I need to have a mag plug on hand when I do my first oil change so I don't want to wait until I remove the plug to find out.

If it does not have a mag plug, will the plug for a 2007 Silverado 5.3L fit? Napa has those but o catalog listing for the 2008 yet. I guess it should fit, but it never hurts to axe.

Nothing on mine appeared to be magnetic and there was no shrapnel attached to it, so I would say no. Just a standard drain plug.

A magnetic plug wouldn't HURT anything, I guess the question is why? A very small percentage of engine oil ever comes in contact with the drain plug surface area and the wear items in an engine are mostly non magnetic metals. I bet if we discuss this further, it could become as heated as a K&N or Synthetic vs Dino oil thread! :jester:

get a mag-tec cover....its got a magnet

I don't think they make a "cover" for the oil pan do they?

I thought they only made transmission pans & rear-end covers.

+1 except for the '04 and '99 stuff. :jester:

SO....

YOu are saying that my truck probably has a magnetic plug? I guess I should be happy that it has been shrapnel free! :jester:

You would know it by looking. There is a small cylindrical magnet sticking out of the tip of the plug. It's about 1/4 in long. WRT the need for it - on every new car that I've had that came with one - the tip looked like it had a little afro. All magnetic drain plugs will grab some metal on a new engine. And I break mine in "by the book" , going easy for the first 500 miles.

Will it make a big difference? Probably not. The motor will probably go over 200K mile either way. But it's one of those feel good measures I like to do.

+1 Mine has one, as did my 2000 and my 89. My wife's 04 Impala also has one. In fact, I cannot remember ever owning a vehicle that didn't have one.

Sebrings are like Bic lighters. They are disposable. They have no drain plug, or gas cap. :smash:

What the hell... even if it grabs very little I guess it's cheap insurance... AND TRUCKS ARE NOT CHEAP!
