New Black 2008 Silverado Ext. Cab

So Yeah, my mom bought a New Black 2008 Silverado Extended Cab 2WD for me (4.8 V8). I am lining my bed with Line-X too:) (pics soon). Before the Silverado I was driving a 2007 Honda Accord with an Alpine system in it. Since my mom doesn't want the sound system in her Accord, I'll be taking it. I have a few questions about car audio though.

I'm assuming its completely possible to uninstall the aftermarket audio system in the Accord and restore it to factory audio, right?

Can you point me in the right direction of DIY installation/uninstallation?

Should I attempt to do it if I have never done such a thing before and I'm an Über n00b about that stuff (but not retarded)?

I'd also like help with the custom sub enclosure to use in the Silverado Extended Cab. I know I may need to get two smaller subs and I was told that having two 10" subs are better than a single 12" sub in trucks and SUV's, can you give me your opinions?

Can you also suggest good custom sub enclosures? I've looked around, but I would appreciate it if you could suggest something to me, since You all have more knowledge about all of this than I do.

Should I replace the stock radio with the Alpine head unit? Would I benifit that much from installing it?

Where do you think the Head unit is installed in the nnbs models? Does it need an installation kit?

This is what is in the Honda Accord

Head Unit: Alpine CDE-9874

Front Speakers: Alpine SPS-600 6.5"

Rear Speakers: Alpine SPS-609 6"x9"

Subwoofer: Alpine SWE-1243 12"

Amplifier: Alpine MRP-M500

The Silverado

Head Unit: I already proposed the question, should I replace the factory one? And I'll need some goofy wiring for OnStar I think?

Front Speakers: 6.5" So I'll use the ones I already have, but Crutchfield says they will fit but I need to modify it somehow? Can Anyone elaborate on this please?

Rear Speakers: 6.5" If The ones I already have will fit and whatnot I'll just buy another pair, would you agree I do so?

Subwoofer(s): Refer to the questions about custom box and sizes. one 12" or two 10"s? And Sub enclosures?

Amplifier: This would work fine right?

I really appreciate it if you even finished reading the post and would EXTREMELY appreciate it if you answered my questions (Dan, help me out here please ). And about the DIY audio, once I got the necessary parts and speakers, I would probably be comfortable talking to someone on the phone walking me through it and stuff, or I'd even appreciate a phone call about all of this stuff, since this is a pretty long post.

PS: I've googled and searched as much as I could, now I'm turning to the people I can trust.. so any help is gratefully accepted.

PPS: Pics soon Dan.

Edit: The equipment / speakers that I do not use I will probably sell. I would gladly sell for a decent price to one of you guys using Paypal. Thanks.

Congrats on the truck...if you are fortunate to have such a great gift, respect it and take care of it, unlike many I see around here...

If you didn't install the Honda stereo, I'd pay someone to take it out, preferably the same shop who put it in. Getting it out is usually much faster and cheaper. Might give you a discount at installing into new truck...

Yes I will take very very good care of the truck. It is an amazing vehicle, and whenever I get into it I think about that Escalade commercial. "When you turn on your vehicle... does it return the favor?" I get so pumped when I get into the Silverado its awesome :)

And alright I'll probably take it to best buy to get it taken out and stuff, but do you think I could try to install the system into the Silverado or just leave it to best buy?

After reading your post, I firmly believe that you would be much better off by having any aftermarket system professionally installed in the truck. Because the truck OEM radio is physically a different size from the single-DIN Alpine unit, you will need some sort of installation kit for the new truck.

The wiring harness will be different so some sort of adapter will be needed to fit the truck. Whether or not the Alpine unit can handle the OnStar system is something else. Did the truck come with XM as part of the radio? If it did, there will need to be some sort of connection for that assuming that 1) you want to use it, or 2) the Alpine head unit is satellite-ready.

(EDIT: looks like the specific radio you have is not satellite ready or nav-ready so I would expect that OnStar may not work with what you have. Because the radio does have aux input capability, you could get satellite radio at some point if that's what you want.

Sub placement may be an issue given the way the rear part of the cab is designed. Also, the mounting location, physical size of the amp, and necessary wiring will be additional steps and you may find that a suitable location for an amp will be an issue. An installer may give you some suggestions on specific wiring options for the speakers too. Factory speaker wire does not typically allow the speaker to get all the power they need for the best sound.

As far as what Crutchfield says about speaker fitment, I would not completely trust them. Big company, but they do get things wrong. The NBS truck may be something they don't have tons of experience with yet. A professional installer can (and will :) ) get anything to "fit".

B-B will be able to easily remove the system from the Accord and re-install the OEM radio. As far as them doing the install in the new truck, I would first ask them if they have done aftermarket installs on the new trucks, and I would also ask to see a completed example where a single-DIN radio was used. Or at the least, ask to see if there are pictures of such an install.

Wow! You're certainly lucky! What a great gift from your mom!

I'm assuming its completely possible to uninstall the aftermarket audio system in the Accord and restore it to factory audio, right?

Yes, you can remove the system from the Accord and restore the OEM one as long as you've got all the original pieces and no physical modifications for mounting were done. Removing the stuff from the Accord is easy, but reinstalling the OEM could be more difficult.

Can you point me in the right direction of DIY installation/uninstallation?

Here are a couple of sites.

Should I attempt to do it if I have never done such a thing before and I'm an Über n00b about that stuff (but not retarded)?

How brave are you? It's a fair sized project to uninstall/reinstall the Accord and then install the truck. Do you have the time, the tools?

I'd also like help with the custom sub enclosure to use in the Silverado Extended Cab. I know I may need to get two smaller subs and I was told that having two 10" subs are better than a single 12" sub in trucks and SUV's, can you give me your opinions?

The two 10" subs will give an overall better sound than one 12".

There are the SubThump boxes that will fit in your truck. There are also JL Audio Stealth boxes that will fit.

Should I replace the stock radio with the Alpine head unit? Would I benifit that much from installing it?

Kind of your choice here. The Alpine head unit can be made to work with the right adapters.

Where do you think the Head unit is installed in the nnbs models? Does it need an installation kit?

The headunit isn't a separate module hidden anywhere. Not entirely sure what you're meaning here.

This is what is in the Honda Accord

Head Unit: Alpine CDE-9874

Front Speakers: Alpine SPS-600 6.5"

Rear Speakers: Alpine SPS-609 6"x9"

Subwoofer: Alpine SWE-1243 12"

Amplifier: Alpine MRP-M500

The Silverado

Head Unit: I already proposed the question, should I replace the factory one? And I'll need some goofy wiring for OnStar I think?

If you replace the headunit, you will need the proper wiring adapters to maintain OnStar, chimes, and steering wheel controls. If you leave the OEM headunit and go with a pure aftermarket sub you'll (probably) need an adapter harness to interface the OEM headunit and amp and probably OnStar, chimes, and steering wheel controls. It depends on what OEM audio system you have.

Front Speakers: 6.5" So I'll use the ones I already have, but Crutchfield says they will fit but I need to modify it somehow? Can Anyone elaborate on this please?

Yes, the 6.5 will fit but need an adapter plate to mount properly.

Rear Speakers: 6.5" If The ones I already have will fit and whatnot I'll just buy another pair, would you agree I do so?

Yes, 6.5's will fit in the back, but need the same mounting adapter that the front will need.

The 6x9's won't fit anywhere without significant modification and mounting.

Subwoofer(s): Refer to the questions about custom box and sizes. one 12" or two 10"s? And Sub enclosures?

See above. :)

Amplifier: This would work fine right?

Depends on what you do with the head unit and the OEM amp and what OEM audio system is already in the truck. For the most part the OEM headunit and OEM amp work together for not only music, but for steering wheel controls, warning chimes, OnStar, and for XM Radio.

I really appreciate it if you even finished reading the post and would EXTREMELY appreciate it if you answered my questions (Dan, help me out here please :sigh: ). And about the DIY audio, once I got the necessary parts and speakers, I would probably be comfortable talking to someone on the phone walking me through it and stuff, or I'd even appreciate a phone call about all of this stuff, since this is a pretty long post.

Feel free to post away any questions you have.

Well you've figured out that I'm a postwhore, but I do know some stuff. Mostly issues that arise when you have a truck with almost 175k on it (rust, suspension, water pumps, still haven't figured out my damn heat problem... The list goes on.) :sigh:

just my opinion but you really cant go wrong by looking at crutchfield...they dont have the best selection but they do tell you everything you need for the install

yeah i look at crutchfield all the timeabout speaker sizes and stuff.. so i already knew that i would have to buy another pair of the 6.5" and i wouldnt even need the 6"x9"

What if it is like this with the mounting kit or whatever it is called..? is it still possible to return it to factory radio and everything? Here are some pictures (pretty big, so that's why I linked em)

I was thinking the same thing.

There are the SubThump boxes that will fit in your truck. There are also JL Audio Stealth boxes that will fit.

JL is a pretty expensive for me, so I'm checking out the SubThump. I've searched the forums and i couldn't find anything, so have you or anyone purchased anything from SubThump?

Should I replace the stock radio with the Alpine head unit? Would I benifit that much from installing it?

Kind of your choice here. The Alpine head unit can be made to work with the right adapters.

K, I kinda have a little n00b question. When the deck / face plate / head unit (whats the official name for that, btw?) was installed on the accord, it seemed as if the power must have been disconnected all together from the area inside the red circle (see picture 3.) So do you have any idea if something similar would to happen if i got it installed in the Silverado?

Pic 3

Where do you think the Head unit is installed in the nnbs models? Does it need an installation kit?

The headunit isn't a separate module hidden anywhere. Not entirely sure what you're meaning here.

Sorry for the confusing question. I mean like, where will the radio be installed exactly? Will it completely replace the stock radio? Or will it be installed similar to the accord where nothing is taken out and the radio is installed in a different location in the truck / dash?

Kinda similar to this thread. It's a similar question, maybe you can get a better idea there.

This is what is in the Honda Accord

Head Unit: Alpine CDE-9874

Front Speakers: Alpine SPS-600 6.5"

Rear Speakers: Alpine SPS-609 6"x9"

Subwoofer: Alpine SWE-1243 12"

Amplifier: Alpine MRP-M500

The Silverado

Head Unit: I already proposed the question, should I replace the factory one? And I'll need some goofy wiring for OnStar I think?

If you leave the OEM headunit and go with a pure aftermarket sub you'll (probably) need an adapter harness to interface the OEM headunit and amp and probably OnStar, chimes, and steering wheel controls. It depends on what OEM audio system you have.

K. Explain to me what chimes are? and I dont have steering wheel controls, but like i said up there ^^ I'd still like to maintain lighting in the other parts of the dash, such as the air conditioning and crap.

So if i get an aftermarket sub, I'll have to use a different harness all together - Meaning that nothing is taken out of the dash and that the harness is added somewhere for the deck?

I dont have any special audio system, no bose or anything.. so.

Front Speakers: 6.5" So I'll use the ones I already have, but Crutchfield says they will fit but I need to modify it somehow? Can Anyone elaborate on this please?

Yes, the 6.5 will fit but need an adapter plate to mount properly.

Do you know of this adapter plate? How much will it cost etc? I just would like to be informed about this stuff, ya know.

Haha, yeah I was suggesting buying another pair of the 6.5".. but since my mom suggests to take everything out and leave the speakers, i'll probably end up buying 2 pairs of the same 6.5" speakers, unless I find some other ones or w/e, but ill probably stick with the same model, what do you think - same model?

Subwoofer(s): Refer to the questions about custom box and sizes. one 12" or two 10"s? And Sub enclosures?

See above.

So if I use the apline amp, would it be possible to hook it up to the steering controls, warning chimes, OnStar, etc?

Thanks again.

Congrats on the new ride!!

Thanks :)

car audio is not as hard as you think i installed my own the only diffrence that i ran into in my 04 was i had to get a little converter box so all of my lights, bells and what not still worked in the stock deck there is a computer that is already in there. you just have to get a aftermarket replacement computer (i got mine from wallmart for like 20 bucks car toys wanted like 130 just for the part) just make it look clean take off the side liners that go on each side of the doors. i say both sides becuase the power and the audio (l/r) cables you want to run as far away from one another as you can i put my power on my drivers side and my audio cables on my passanger side this is to reduce distortion. it is really just plug and play for most part the solid wires connect to the solid's and the stripes connect to the stripes. like i said before it is all pretty basic GL (if you are going to it yourself)

No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
