I Am Very Depressed, Maybe You Can Help

Maybe someone can help me out here, I took my 01 ext cab z-71 with 122k miles on it, there was transfer case oil slinging off the front u joint to a repair shop. The guy said it was not the seal, but the yoke itself that the oil was coming through. Has anyone ever heard of this? He is correct in the fact that the seal itself is dry, I washed everything off down there and checked it today, tho fluid is still being distributed/broadcast right above the u-joint. On top of this, also found out another noise I have is a pinion gear, and I also have a leaking rear main oil seal. Not a good thing to be in construction in michigan (or anywhere else) Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.

Gee thanx guys, I have already tried the prozak but that didnt help.It sounds like you dont know if the oil could come through the yoke.

I'm in the same boat. Leaks and annoying sounds coming from underneath. Gradually working on my own fixes for those issues. Going to drop the front differential and CV axles this weekend and replace the bearings/seals on the differential and clean/re-grease the CV joints. I've got humming/growling sounds that care coming from the front and underneath. The transfer case is also slinging oil from mine, but not much so I'm not too worried. It's just the growling sound I think is coming from the transfer case or rear-end and the humming/whining sound is from a bearing up front. Either a wheel bearing(s) or differential bearing(s). Gonna do a two-wheel drive test as well....with the differential and axles out of the front.

You have to have a good sense of humor in here!

The yoke is basically a one piece item. I can't see how it could leak unless it was around the seal. Does it have a nut through the center? I think I would get a second opinion on that. As far as the rear main seal goes, most engines with 122K seep enough to drip a drop or two. Same sortof goes for the pinion noise. Both of those problems probably won't worsen much anytime soon. I'd change the fluid in the rear and front diffs and the transfer case.

Well last night I pulled the driveshaft, and replaced the seal at the rear of the transfer case, I already had it. The yoke is basically one piece and looks like the rear part which is round is actually welded in, and it does appear that the fluid is actually getting through and then gets flung off the u joint. I could not see any holes with a strong light, but there was autotrac fluid only past the yoke and not on the seal. I will probably replace the yoke and pinion gear, and thanx everyone for your input. I was just trying to find out if this was a common problem.

Cool, take pictures if you could

I am having the same issues with my truck, it is a 1999 Z71 with 136K on it.

I have what sounds like a bad wheel bearing, but only when my foot is not on the gas, if I give it any amount of throttle it is quiet, let off and its loud as hell.

Is this a bearing in the t-case or front diff? Noise doesnt change in when in 4x4.

I just replaced my driveshaft yolk with a new nickel plated one because of a clunk. It cost me $575 at the dealer in Canada. I would recommend shopping around for an aftermarket one. Wish I would have. duh!

I'm thinking the growling sound is coming from the transfer case or front end bearings somewhere on yours and mine. I had to just drop off my truck to get the front differential bearings/seals replaced. I'll find out Monday if the howling/whining is diminished or gone. I'm hoping it will be gone. No one on this forum has had these issues for some reason as I've had very little or no advice, much less outside this forum. Also, may have these guys replace the transfer case seals which are leaking. And I'm contemplating having the rear-main seal replaced as it leaks quite a bit. I'm kinda wishing I had bought the older body-style truck. I don't recall these issues of noises and leaks on the 89-98(99) models.

I really do miss my '96 K1500. It was a much better truck in terms of durability, at least thats my experience. 200K miles and never let me down, ever.

I am wondering if I have damaged bearings on the right side of the transfer case. I took a hard hit last winter to the right side tire, needed new control arms, rim, everything on that side. The bodyshop sent me on my way and I knew something else ws wrong, a couple days after I dropped it back off to them they called and told me I had a tweaked frame. They supposedly fixed it all, but I cant help but wonder if that hit I took is my issue now.

I need to do some more research on the transfer case.

Do you mean damaged damaged bearings on the front differential right side axle tube? It is possible that part of it is damaged as well. The right side has a tube with part of the axle in it and it is anchored by a bracket to rubber bushings to the frame.

Thanks for the heads up- I am going to check it tomorrow.

As a side note- I get a "boing" sound like a spring being let go if I punch it from a stop- someone mentioned this might be a t-case pump going bad? Ever hear of such a thing?

Ya know, I got to thinking, the noise goes away when I turn right- that pretty much nails either a wheel bearing or a front diff bearing or other issue.

Since I know its not a wheel bearing (applying throttle makes the noise go away) I am kind of led to think its the front diff......... but no power is applied to this in 2wd............. guess I dont have a clue afterall.

There is power applied through the forward driveshaft from the transfer case which is supported by a bearing, and still moving things in the front differential.
