Anybody Install A Double Din In An '01 1.5 Din Slot?

I have an '01 Suburban with the old 1.5 DIN slot for the radio. I replaced the factory HU with a Pioneer single-DIN unit with the XM and iPod interfaces. Works great, but the display is a little small. I am also thinking that NAV capabilities would be nice....

 

I'm not keen on those motorized single-DIN units where the display comes out and flips up, I'd rather have a built in display like on the double-DIN sized units. Is there any to trim or otherwise adjust the opening to shoehorn a double-DIN unit in there? Anyone try it?

I don't know of anyone here who has done it, but from what I hear, all you need to do is get an 03+ dash bezel, relocate the HVAC controls, and do some minor fabrication to the dash.

03 was the year they switched to double DIN head units? The dash bezel sounds easy enough, but where do the HVAC conytrols go? Like ranger396vs says, would be great if anyone has pics....Or even still, does anyone have a photo of their '03+ stock dash?

Random, I have a 94 k1500 ext cab, and I also own and prefer a full double din deck as opposed to a flip out model. I just went today and purchased fiberglass resin, mat, etc, and I am going to configure my double din into the middle console area, where the tape deck would be. well we are going to give it a shot. I used to do quite a bit of fiberglass work on Hondas when I was a late teenager, however this is my first gm vehicle, and I need to see if I still got it. Will keep you posted. Right on GM forum. I was on the ford one until I totaled my last ride. Glad you chevy folk are keeping it real also. Peace...

Cool, post some pics when you're done with the mod. I never thought of relocating it to the center console.

i had my stereo installer guy put an alpine iva w203 in my silverado 2001, he just cut the factory trin ring above ur fan controls, looks good enuiff for me
