Truck Test

Long Lasting! And if there isn't enough time, longest lasting without any maintenace what-so-ever. That would be a cool relavent test. They all have to be hauling something too.

  • 0-60 time - loaded

  • 0-60 time - unloaded

  • Braking performance - loaded

  • Braking performance - unloaded

  • General handling ability 1-10

  • Ride quality - 1 to 10

  • Interior noise level - Db level

Buyers can read the damn window sticker and see if is has an MP3 plug or WussyNav. Same goes for fuel economy or other options. Anybody buying a V8 truck based on fuel economy is really not a truck guy. The sticker would indicate if one got 12 mpg and another 20 mpg. We can choose from there.

I'd say 1/2 ton 2WD trucks with popular options: V8 / automatic trans / 3.42 gears (or as similar as possible) all in the same Cab configuration. Reg, Ext, or Crew wouldn't matter to me. One GM, one FORD, one DODGE, one NISSAN, one TOYOTA. All pulled from dealer inventory and not supplied by the manufacturer. (no tweaked "for testing" models.

This way we could look at the numbers and have a real world idea what they were capable of.

- 0-60 loaded and unloaded

- 60-0 loaded and unloaded

- Dry pavement handling loaded and unloaded

- Wet pavement handling loaded and unloaded

- Off road handling

- Fuel economy loaded and unloaded (not weighted heavily)

- Ride loaded and unloaded (not weighted heavily)

- Overall fit and finish

- Cargo room

I would NOT bring options like nav, stereo, leather/cloth, heated seats, sunroof, legroom/headroom and other options that don't affect the 'truck-ness' into play. Like Jim said, we can look at that stuff ourselves, and things like ride and interior features can be determined on a simple test drive, where performance oriented stuff can't really be.

I think in an ideal world, it would be nice to see two engine offerings from each manufacturer: the biggest V8 they have, then a smaller one (6.2 and 5.3 for GM, 5.4 and 4.6 for Ford, 5.7 and 4.7 for Toyota, 5.7 and whatever else Dodge has, you get the point), extended or crew cab, 4x4, middle of the road ring & pinion ratio, trim level shouldn't matter, but they should all be comparable.

And to determine the winner, have a demolition derby, and the last truck running wins.

EDIT: How could I forget. REAL world towing a payload capacities, and HOW the trucks perform with a certain load. Any manufacturer can bump the crap out of their ratings, but that doesn't mean the truck will PERFORM at those loads.

Suspension Packages

Engines

Transmissions

Braking Systems

GCVWR and GVWR (seriously wait till you see how much difference there is)

Emissions (upkeep and how they affect the warranty)

Frame

Cab Configurations

and last but not least Warranties

In that range of truck it is best to consider the class of truck and keep in mind it is meant to handle weight and transport and stop it.

While these are all good suggestions, you can certainly see how and why these tests get so complicated that it is hard to understand or use the outcome.

I like the Demo Derby Idea and think it should be done just to see it. The thing is that most trucks now are either crew or extended probably mostly crew, so go with that. We Are Talking About Trucks Here! All the other options should be out!. Who cares about the sissy leather or cup holders in this test?

How Much Tail You Can Get! That's Great.

I have to agree with all of the testing ideas. Especially the warranties one. It seems that a bunch of items have to be replaced within the first couple years, and well hey, for the price of these trucks, it's always nice to get something free in return. I also love the idea of pulled from a dealer inventory. As much as the Makers would like to say that these trucks are stock, I highly doubt that they haven't been touched at all. Keep up the good work guys!

I still like my idea of the actual truck testing. The warranty isn't even a test. The real test is the actual performance of the truck. The winner would obviously not even need a better warranty for us to pay for or spend time totake it in for or anything. The test should let us know that we don't have to do this.

IMO warranty should have no impact on the winner of a comparison. We can decide for ourselves, and find out by looking at a piece of paper which truck has the best warranty. A shootout like this should only really compare the things that the average person can't find out through research and a test drive (you can find out warranty, options, interior/exterior aesthetics etc. relatively easily on your won, while most dealers won't let you put a ton of rocks in the bed, hook up an 8k lb trailer, or take the truck on an autocross course).

No matter what the outcome of the tests... I am going to buy a GMC.

I really don't give a rat's ass about the others and I'm not a price shopper.

I would want to drive it as fast as I could and see if it would stop just before falling over a cliff!:thumbs:

If you need some help, I'm sure we could get you some numbers. It's alright dude hange in there!

You are my hero!

I am the same way. Money is hard to come by, but damn! I got over buyer's remorse a long time ago!
