Gmpp Exhaust System Has Arrived

I'm so excited. The box it came in is huge. I think the hardest part of installing this system is loosening all of the nuts on the stock exhaust system. I've never installed an exhaust system, but it did come with directions. Any tips from those who have installed exhaust systems before?

I'd like to see some pics of exhaust systems already installed especially views from underneath. I'll add more pics when I attempt the install over the weekend.

Trust me,The hardest part is removing your old factory system.

Installing the new system should be easy!

you only need to remove 2 bolts.. the pipe that connects to the pipe coming from cats at the flange

 

everything else is held in by rubber exhaust hangers.. and what i do is spray them with soap water / wd40 to make them slide off easier and the easiest way to get them off is with your hands.. depending on what you want to do you can jack the back of the truck up (frame, like off the back part of the hitch) and you can sneak the old exhaust up over the axle if you want to save it.. or you cut just cut it in the middle with a hacksaw.

 

re-install is even easier since its all in sections so its not so heavy..

 

remember to buy a new gasket that goes between the flange where you bolt the new pipe to if it didnt come with one..

The kit did not come with a new gasket, so if someone could get me a part number that would be great.

 

Also, I need to remove a total of 4 bolts. There are two up front for the flange and two 21mm ones in the rear where the receiver bolts to the frame for two additional hangars.

You don't need any gasket,There isn't any on the GMT800/GMT900 trucks....(There was on the GMT400 trucks)

 

And I'm trying to figure out what two bolts you mean in the rear? I've installed many systems on GMT800 trucks (Hell I've installed many systems on GMT400 trucks as well!!) And I don't remember removing any in the rear,unless you mean you have to remove two bolts to "add" hangers since your system is a "dual-rear" exit style system?

yea you must have to add hangers.. any exhaust ive put on there is usually only 2/3 bolts holding the flanges together..

what does something like that cost?

 

It goes for $630 from the dealer not including the tips. I got it brand new on Ebay for $400 shipped.

Yes. I have to use two bolts in the rear to add hangars. I hope they're nothing like the studs on the front flange. I'm just going to spray the hell out of them with some PB Blaster and hope they don't shear.

Those don't look too bad,soak them down with WD40 or PB-Blaster.

Alright, so I was able to loosen the nuts on those rear bolts and it was surprisingly easy. Tomorrow is the day when I really start the install. I just have a few more questions. It appears that the stock exhaust is held in place by those two studs at the flange and just a few hangars. Are the straps on the muffler attached to the truck somehow? Are the hangars welded in place to the frame? How difficult is it to separate the rubber part of the hangars from the exhaust itself? Is the exhaust heavy, or can I remove it by myself? Lastly, is the new muffler from the GMPP system suppose to go in a specific direction, I've never done this before so it may be a stupid question to those more knowledgeable?

the straps on the muffler do not hold it up. they hold the muffler together.

 

the hangers are welded to the frame and your new exhaust will utilize those stock hangers.

 

the rubber boots come off easy with some wd40 you just pull the rubber around the stud and it will come off. only take it off the exhaust though you re-use those on your new system.

 

id say the whole system weighs 100 lbs Tops

 

you should be able to do it i do them all the time..

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
