Buying A Gmc/chevy 2500

Hey Folks

I am buying a 2008 Diesel Sierra or Silverado 2500 crew cab while the deals are so good. I will have this truck for a long time, as I tend to get everything possible out of my vehicles. I am trying to future proof this rig. I want to maximise the potential future hauling and towing capacity with the available factory options. That way if I get a new cab-over or a trailer or schooner or what not I will be able keep more options open.

I do not tow anything as of yet and one option I didn't understand was the alternators. The GM 2500s have optional 160-amp alternators and/or dual 125 amp alternators on the list of upgrades. What does the choice of either do for me?

Also, I understand that going to the 4.10 axle ratio is best for maximising towing, but I figure since there are at least 3 options for axle ratio than the other ratios must serve a purpose, what am I giving up or doing differently by going with the 4.10?

Can't comment on the difference between the alternator choices...good question though. I would like to know. I have the dual 125amp alternators in my truck.

For the axle ratio, if you go with the d-max, it'll be a 3.73 (at least, from what I see from the gm site).

I'd think the single 160 AMP would be plenty unless it was a 100% dedicated tow rig and needed power capacity for the trailer. As far as gears go, the D-Max would probably like 3.73 better than 4.10s since the power and torque are lower in the RPM range than a gas engine.

You won't need 4.10's with the Dirty Max. When it comes to the alternators, I'm not 100% sure, but the dual alternator trucks are done on the two battery vehicles when the second battery might be used for something else, like powering a trailor, winch, or plow on the front of the truck. It just keeps the one alternator from having a lot of pull on it. So if you're just pulling a heavy trailor that doesn't require power, and you're not putting a blade on or sitting with your truck on without your engine running don't worry about the second alternator. But a convenience to the 2 alternator system is obviously if one goes out, the other is there to give the thing a little juice. Good Luck

Thanks everyone, I am going to do an email blast tonight and see what my local dealers will offer me!
