Recalls Done And Sloppy Steering

New member here.

 

I just purchased a 2000 Chevy Suburban K1500 LT with approx 94,000 miles. I see the list of recalls but is there any way to verify they are done? My VIN is 1GNFK16T9YJ205079.

 

Second question- the steering is "sloppy". Can turn the wheel a bit in either direction before the truck moves. Not dangerous but irritating. Is there a way to tighten this up a bit without major parts replacement?

My advice would be to start with a complete check of the steering sector. 94k would be ripe for tie rod, ball joints, etc. I am not the aficionado most here are and I am sure someone can give specifics on your truck.

Art is right. I'd put it up on a rack and check out the front suspension. I doubt much is worn out, but depending on how well it was cared for, there is a solid chance that something needs replacing. As far as the "recalls" go, all vehicles have recalls and campaigns. You might try your dealer and see it they can tell you what has been done to yours. Keep in mind that there is usually a vin range on recalls or campaigns.. meaning that all vehicles from that year are not affected... just a select number.

If you have a trusted alignment shop like we do here in Torrance CA in Johnson's Alignment, take it to them for an inspection. After I rebuilt/replaced what I thought were all the high wear components in my 1999 GMC Sierra, they found the idler and pitman arm joints were worn out which produced quite a bit of play in the steering. Even showed me the looseness while another mechanic worked the wheel. All is well now.

It seems the idler arm is usually the first to go in the chain. You can DIY on that or have a shop do it for a about $$$. Also, if you have a good dealership in your area you would like to have as a future relationship with, stop by the service department and ask them to run a VIN history for you. I did that with one of my other vehicles. OF couse they would only have "corporate" service history and not the local mom-and-pop stuff, but at least it's more than you have now.
