Transfer Case

I have a 2004 Silverado 4x4. When I have it in four wheel drive and turn at low speed I have a loud humming noise coming from the transfer case. I notice that it feels like its fighting me when I turn. Had it back to the dealer since it is still under warranty, they tell me it normal. I just wondering if it is really normal.

Normal. Just the gears in your t-case. Your t-case is binding a little when turning. If you are in snow or dirt, you'll be fine. If you are on dry pavement, you are risking ruining the t-case. If you are doing close quarter maneuvering, then run in Auto-4wd (if you have it), otherwise put it in 2wd and go easy on the gas.

 

Normal 4wd doesn't like lots of turning. when in 4hi, your front wheels are turning at different speeds (outside wheel vs inside wheel) and are "fighting" each other. Auto-4wd runs off a clutch pack in the t-case and can "slip" so it doesn't bind up. 4x4 lock doesn't disengage the wheels and starts fighting you.

Whenever I am in 4X4, my transfer case makes the same humming sound, and it is normal.
