2004 GMC SD and the little things starting to go bad... Now I'm dealing with the stereo... Lost passenger side speakers. Replaced with a factory stereo from ebay. Worked for a week then lost them again. Now the drivers side front has also gone out. Best Buy tested speaker and said it is shot (How can a factory speaker go bad witin a couple of years??? AND its not blown!.

Ordered aftermarket stereo from Crutchfield and speakers from Best Buy... QUESTION on the Wiring - does anyone know if the wire lead going to the front speaker (not the tweeter) is the full signal OR does the factory stereo crossover the freaquency.

Thanks!!

Hi there and welcome to GM Trucks! :sigh:

I guess that is the question. Why are the speakers going out so quickly. I would check the speaker wiring for a short someplace that is causing the problem.

Also with the new head unit, make sure you get the right adapter wiring harness for it. As it takes a special harness to interface properly with your truck.

For the GM stereo, it depends on which one it is if the speaker leads are line level or already amplified. Does your truck have a GM amplifier in it?

On my 400 series truck they are the same wire except the tweeter has a "crossover" on it to prevent bass from being played through it. On my 800 series truck I haven't really looked at it but I am 99% positive that it is the same way. When you look at the harness coming out of the truck there is only 4 speaker outputs. So they just split the front door wires and put a "crossover" on the tweeter. So the speakers get the full signal whether or not they are a tweeter or full range speaker.

I have the same problem with my stock speakers failing. Sometimes they will work and sometimes they won't work. I got fed up with it in the front doors and replaced them with some Boston Acoustics SX65s. I am waiting to do the back doors because I don't sit back there I don't need to hear anything. :sigh:

BTW I quoted crossover because I am pretty sure that it is just a very simple bass blocker instead of a full fledged crossover.

EDIT: This is a standard radio btw and not a BOSE radio that I am talking about.

Sounds like you had the same problems... They come in and go out, then finally stay out... I ran my own DJ company for over 10 years and used high end equipment, so I am very sensitive to cheap stuff! Well, now I'm doing what you did... replacing, starting with the front. I was going to start going into major tests, looking for shorts, etc., but I took it to Best Buy and they threw it on a test (the speaker). I still may double check and make sure the wires are not shorted out.

Thanks for the suggestion (for all the posts), I kind of figured they sent full range signal and simply used frequency filters instead of an active (or passive)crossover system. In fact, that seem

I seem to remember reading somewhere that GM uses a different approach to the wiring. It stated something about Negative hookup or being backwards from how everyone else does it. Well that being said, I did find the wire codes for an 03 if it helps:

Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Orange

Radio Switched 12V+ Wire: (Class 2 Serial Data)

Radio Ground Wire: Black/White

Radio Illumination Dimmer Wire: N/A

Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: Dark Green

Radio Amplifier Trigger Wire: Pink

Front Speakers Size: N/A

Front Speakers Location: N/A

Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Tan

Left Front Speaker Wire (-): Gray

Right Front Speaker Wire (+): Light Green

Right Front Speaker Wire (-): Dark Green

Rear Speakers Size: N/A

Rear Speakers Location: N/A

Left Rear Speaker Wire (+): Brown

Left Rear Speaker Wire (-): Yellow

Right Rear Speaker Wire (+): Dark Blue

Right Rear Speaker Wire (-): Light Blue

Just upgrade your speakers, they are made with the same high end south of the border soldering materials our dashboards are wired with. You will be much happier after they are replaced with a quality product.

I replaced all of my factory speakers with infinity last year. i used components up front, ran the main connection into a crossover and the speakers off of it. I checked my 6.5 woofer on both the main and tweeter factory connections during install and could not tell the difference. Sound is awesome now, factory tweeter connection is just hanging in the door now.
