Aren't they both broadcasting the same content now anyway?

Since they merged, aren't they kinda the same now?

Don

Yes and no! They are the same company but they do not offer all of the channels on each unit! So you can not get all of the XM channels on Sirius and vise versa. Also if you currently have Sirius you can not change that contract over to XM so most people try and change out the equipment, another reason I'm not a customer. You have to change your package and they charge a heck of a lot more than the $15 a month.

NO! they are "offering" the same channels both ways (if you have XM you can get the "best of Sirius" and vice versa) for ALOT of money extra.. I have a lifetime subscription to Sirius now they want something like $180 to ge the XM channels added?? I thought this merger was going to "help" the consumer.. more BS..

thanks for the info on the converter... it looks like the Sir1 is ONLY for the classic model not the NBS?

Anyone do this yet?

The SIR-GM1 does not work on the '07+ new body style GM trucks. Sirius was supposed to release SIR-GM3 back in the fall of '07, but they did not. Instead, they kept putting the release off by three or four months, at a time. Last I knew, it was supposed to be released at the end of the fourth quarter of '08. Well, it's still not released and neither Sirius, Directed Electronics (company that "makes" the unit), nor any of the alleged suppliers, knows much if anything about when or if it will ever be released.

My wife has Sirius in her car, I've got XM in my truck. Neither Sirius nor XM will allow a "family plan" ($12.99/month for the first radio and $6.99/month for the second radio) unless both radios are setup with the same service. So, I've ordered a new head unit with the Sirius tuner.

XM uses ground repeaters to deliver the service, where Sirius is direct from sattelite. Sirius sounds better, in my opinion, than XM, perhaps due to the delivery method.

There is some overlap in channels now. I think what they've done is reduce the overall offerings to save money, while still charging the consumer the full bill.

That explains why XM has a couple of dead spots near my house where there are tall trees on some large hills on one side of the road. When I had my trial going, i was wondering how we could have dead spots like that from a satellite service.

Actually, there's more to this:

XM and Sirius both use satellites as the -primary- transmission means. They are, however, in different orbits.

XM - Geostationary - From you receiving location, their satellite appears at the same location. They also use ground repeaters to fill in locations where satellite reception is poor - typically in major metropolitan areas, sky scrapers, etc. Depending on your receiving location, the XM satellites can appear to the receiving antenna to be lower or higher in the sky.

Sirius - Geosynchronous - The satellites (three) are always moving, but only two are actively transmitting at any time of day. And each satellite orbit changes by about 4 minutes per day so the time of day for the different satellite positions changes. Sirius also uses ground repeaters, but in theory they require less of them because the Sirius signal appears to the receiver to be higher above the horizon. Personally I have some reception problems in the southeast when their eastern-most satellite is just rising above the equator (and when I am out of the coverage of a ground repeater).

I've got XM on the trial in the truck, but recently installed a 2nd docking cradle for my Sirius receiver which I will move from car to truck and vice-versa. I purchased a lifetime Sirius subscription (lifetime of the receiver, plus 3 additional receiver swaps at $75 each), so it made sense for me to use Sirius in both vehicles. Plus, now that they've added the XM "Deep Tracks" channel to Sirius, I am completely satisfied with the channel lineup

As for the differences in sound quality, there's some who think Sirius sounds better, and others that feel the same for XM. Each service currently uses different codecs (digital encoding and decoding), and each service has a different number of channels compressed so that they can broadcast all of them within the 12.5MHz the FCC allotted each service. Perhaps someday they will combine both services, but that's likely a long ways away given the changes needed at the receiving end (about 9 million receivers for XM and another 9 million for Sirius). We should, however, soon see radios that can receive both services.

I'm waiting for the announcement of the GM3 receiver as I want to have Sirius in my 08 Silverado withou t having a separate rfeceiver. I have read that the XM antenna that is factory installed doesn't do a very good job of picking up Sirius signals. You can use a Sirius magnetic antenna and it is supposed to plug into the receiver.

I let the trial subscription to XM expire and I was getting 4-5 calls per day from XM. I finally picked the phone up and was ready to dump on the guy but I had heard of a $77 1-year renewal for XM and I tried to get him to give it to me. He said he couldn't do it but I did take another 3 month trial period for $15.

Maybe by the end of that period, the GM3 will be out. If not, I 'll give it another shot to get this special deal.

I have a Starmate-4 that I use in the house and garage and in my 2002 Vette so if theGM3 is available, it will go in the truck.

I must be the only one thats totally happy with XM,and also don't mind paying the little extra to get the "Best of Sirius" channels. (Since I now have my NASCAR channel back!! )

I am also thinking about getting the "lifetime" subscription, but does anyone know what happens when I get rid of my truck? Or if I get a different radio for my car? I mean can you transfer the lifetime subscription over to other radios?

Last time I checked on this with XM, the lifetime subscription stays with the radio, and is not transferrable. In other words, you sell the vehicle, the new owner gets the lifetime subscription. That would be enough for me to NOT go that route.

Thats not a good deal. Even if you were planning to keep the truck things happen IE theft, totaled etc
