Auto 4hi And 4wd Truck Speeds?

hey. have an 01 5.3 with 3.73 gears. ran into some bad roads on I90 the other day and it just got me thinking. i wasnt about to slow down for just some snow and wind ( i probably should have) so i stuck it in auto 4 and kept on going. i thought i remembered looking in the manual before and didnt see anything about it. i know you probably shouldnt be doing 70mph in 4wd, but is there a problem with doing 70mph in the auto4hi?

If you think you need a4wd then you shouldnt be running 70mph.

driving 70 mph in auto isnt a problem......but if u hit a patch of ice and the tires loose traction and it kicks into 4x4 at 70 mph u could break something

well heres a question for ya then. i read in another thread about peoples auto 4 locking in and out. so on the way home from work just for shits n giggles i punched it into auto 4. i was on drypavement which i know is not good for it but i was curious as to what it would do. tried it several different times and each time when i turned sharp enough i could feel the axles starting to bind. on dry pavement like that shouldnt my truck be acting like its in 2 hi?

no, mine does that in 4-auto. there's a bit of binding around corners, and I have left my auto 4 on pretty much all winter because the roads are always crap.

nope. When you're moving at 70mph your still moving at that speed even over the ice. The front wheels will not magically grab and break the truck. Mine would of been damaged long ago then.

According to the Chilton manual, it will switch between 2hi and 4hi up to 55 MPH when the outside temperature is above 32 degrees. If it's under 32 degrees, it will only switch up to 45 MPH.
