Some Noises I Would Like To Figure Out.

Ok I have a 2004 1500 2WD with the 4.8L and have a few noises I would like to try to figure out what is causing them. So I'm hopping someone else will have experienced any of these and know the fix.

I bough this truck in the summer of 2007 and went through the winter of 2007/2008 sitting outside all the time and I don't recall any of the issues listed below, they have started in the last week or two. I don't know if they are really temperature related or not because we have been below 30 for weeks now.

When I start the truck after sitting all day or night (day time temps have been in the 20's and temps in my garage at night are in the mid 30's) and before putting it in gear I will feel a vibration that surges on and off a few times. I don't notice much if any rpm change with this happens.

After starting to drive the first few stops the truck will vibrate as I come to a stop. The best I can describe this is like the transmission is fighting me. It will do this the first few times I stop and the goes away after the trans temp gets up to 40-50°F.

One other noise I'm trying to track down is this rattling (I would say more like a jiggling noise) when I hit bumps, but I can only seam to hear on cretin roads that I drive, I can only hear it at 40mph or less and does not always happen. But it only makes it when I hit a bump and makes the jiggling sound happens only one or two times. Last night I put my truck up on jack stands and look at all the heat shields and anything else I could grab to see if it was loose and could not find anything! The noise seams to come from the front of the truck.

Any ideas you guys have would be great! I don’t know of some of this is related to the cold…but like I said before I don’t remember this from last winter when my truck was outside 24/7.

Thanks

I had the same type of noise and it got really noticeable in the cold because I would have my windows up. check behind the glove box there's a silver open typed box with 2 bolts coming out of it. the nuts on mine were loose tightened them up and the noise was gone

I open my glove box door lastnight all all I can see is the big black box that is the hvac system. Is this silver type box behind that?

You could also have the steering shaft knock/rattle.

Easy fix.

Easy fix...I assume I just go through and make sure all the bolts are tight?

If your good with a wrench, your auto parts store can sell you a updated version. The steering shaft rattle problem has been around for awhile in the 99-06 pickups. Or you can take it to a dealer and they will re grease the splines of it. If you think its your trans, check out the fluid It might need to be flushed.

Thanks.

I hope it is not the trans, I had a fluid flush and filter change this summer. Do you think maybe they messed something up? It is weird it only does it when it is cold. Like I said after a few mins (few stops) it goes away. Today was 25 out and I didn't notice it after work today.

i`ve seen a few a/c compressors do this before, really strange, we could reproduce the problem when we basicaly do a brake stand, minus the tire spin, i beleive the compressor was binding somehow and it would cause the tensioner to rattle and could be felt throughout the truck. easy check....

I can't help with your first two problems but I had the exact same problem with the rattling/jiggling noise when I hit bumps. When I was at the dealer one day I mentioned it and they found the culprit to be a loose nut in the area below the steering wheel (area right above your knees when you're driving). They tightened it up and it went away. That was almost a year ago and the rattle has slightly come back so if you get it checked you might want to mention having the dealer maybe Loc-tite the nut down to hold it tight.
