Sunroof -- Aftermarket O.k. ?

Sunroofs? Has anyone had good experience with aftermarket installs, like 'Inalfa'?

I don't find many SLT, SLE's with factory sunroofs, so unless I order a brand new truck, I'm limited to aftermarket. It's the one 'luxury' item I really do enjoy on my vehicles and for the $1200 I've seen quoted, seems like a good value.

What think you?

I wouldn't do it.

When I ordered my truck I made sure I got the sunroof,Although I almost forgot too!!!!

I had one in my Dodge Ram and loved it. However the sunroof is only as good as the installer. Get references before cutting up your top as there is not turning back. Inalfa is a great brand as well.

I've seen some quality aftermarket sunroofs from a company named ASC. They used to build prototype convertibles for auto manufacturers (may still) so they must have a clue what they are doing. I'm sure there are some others that are good quality.

Only problem with most aftermarket sunroofs is that most eventually leak water. Glass sunroofs are not popular here because they will fry you on a summer afternoon. Here is a link to a company that shows ASC sunroofs. I know nothing about this particular company. (Google find)

I always thought a sunroof would be cool, but the thought of someone cutting a hole in my roof... Also, aftermarket sunroofs don't usually have the added roof supports and drains that the factory ones do.

+1

Thats the other point I should've mentioned,Thats why I decided to never have an aftermarket one put in any of my other trucks.

ASC used to offer a lifetime warranty on their sunroofs and they are as good or better then most OEM. The local Caddy dealer used to order all cars without the GM sunroof and have the local ASC shop add the sunroof since they had a better warranty, leaked less then OE and made the dealer a tad more money. All of my mother's Caddy's except one had locally installed ASC sunroofs and the only one that was a problem was the OE sunroof...my Toyota Supra had an ASC sunroof. My 08 has an OE sunroof and it's leaked intermittently since new.

I put the Webasto/Holinda in my truck in the summer of 2007. LOVE IT!!! It will drain from all 4 sides if there was ever any leakage. Go with the 790 series and you will not be disappointed. I paid $1400 installed and have never had an issue.

Thank guys!

There's a lot of opinions to digest here and I really appeciate them. I'll check out all the sources suggested.

I'd rather buy a truck 'out of inventory' which makes getting a sunroof nearly impossible. It's one less thing to worry about, if I can be confident in an aftermarket sunroof. I'll put it in later.

Avoid aftermarket sunroofs like the plague

You can get the best aftermarket roof, with the best installer.... but I can guarantee you it WILL leak sooner then later.

There are some things that should only come from the factory, and sunroofs are one of them.

Like a few other guys mentioned, having the lack of drainage with an aftermarket roof will cause nothing but headaches.

along with compromising the structural integrity of the truck, it will decrease the resale value as well.

I would highly suggest you get a truck with an oem roof.

I have an ASC sunroof on my 2003 Tahoe. I would have preferred an OEM sunroof, but it was the best deal on any Tahoe I could find in my area at that time.

I check and tighten all the screws every year before rainy season. No leaks yet.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
