Don't Whine

OK, Every morning now for about 30 minutes of shuttling the kids to school I hear a whine type noise from under the hood. The noise does increase with speed and eventually goes away. The dealer wants me to leave it with them so they can experence it. Well the dealer is not close and I need to get the kids to school and I am plowing with it at least once a week.So it would be a real pain to get it to the dealer. I'm thinking idler pulley.Even though it's still under warranty It would be worth it if I replaced it myself. Has anyone else run into this on a 2006 GMC sierra 2500HD QUAD 6.0L ?

Is that what I'm calling the idler pully? The spring loaded belt tensioner?

Yes, but not on the main belt, it's the little one on the AC belt, down low on the pass side.

BTW, post up a pic of that SeaRay!!!

Do you have the ABS that works off of the power steering? I have a slow leak in the pressure line to the master cylinder and when it gets low on fluid it will whine until I top it off. Just my $0.02

You know I did have to add power steering fluid about a month or so ago. I'll have to check to see if it is low. If it is where is the fluid going?

I can see a damp spot on the inner fender but I cannot tell where it is coming from other than the brake booster.

I did find today that the power steering fluid was low again. I topped it off so the noise should go away. However I would like to know where the power steering fluid is going. ANY IDEAS?

Ckeck the input seal on your steering gearbox where the shaft goes in. Mine had a leak there, fixed at local dealership a while back but it is starting to leak again.

I've had to replace the PS pump hoses once at around 100k miles, on my 99 with 214K miles. They start to weep a bit around the swaged ends. They are doing that again, with 214K miles now.

Both my '01 Denali and My '01 HD started to do that this year. It happens when it is cold and the trucks have not been driven in a while. It goes away fairly quickly so I haven't worried about it. I did notice the slight leak in the booster on the HD. Guess I should focus there.
