i'm lookin at getting a new truck, and i dont know if i want a regular cab long bed, with a 5.3 litre and 4.10 gears or a extended cab 6 foot bed with 6.0 litre and 3.73s, i'm also gonna put an sts turbo on it. i'm mostly looking for speed here, which would be faster?

6.0 with 3.73's all the way!

If you are going to modify it anyway why not 4.10's in your 6.0

No replacement for displacement

well, the 6.0 isn't available in the regular cab, and that extended cab adds a lot of weight, that's what i was worried about, i also didnt know that you could get a 6.0 with 4.10s, i'll check that out thanks

The weight difference in the Ext Cab standard bed and the regular cab long bed is about 250lbs. The difference in power/torque potential is well worth it to go to the 6.0.

If you go with the 3.73's and are not happy, you can always change gears.

General estimate is about $1000-1200 for gear install and labor if the truck is a 4x4. Figure about 1/2 of that if its a 2wd.

Also, go with the 6.0 and 4.10's

how much does it cost to change the gears?

Depends on who you have do it...$400 to 1000. A lot cheaper than an STS.

yeah, i'm probably gonna get a turbo either way, i'm just wondering if i should buy a 6.0 with 3.73s off the lot and throw 4.10s in there, but i'll try and find one with 4.10s. that will be hard to do though, cause most 1500s with 6.0s have the vortec max package, which comes with 3.73s, so we'll see what i can find.

Are you looking at 08's or 09's?

If your looking at 08 Vmaxs, the easiest way to tell if it has 3.73's or 4.10's is the front bumper. If it has the slot, it has 4.10's (NHT pkg), if not, it has the 3.73's.

All 09's now have the slot, even the 5.3's.

i'm not sure what the "slot" is but i'll check that out, and is the nht the max trailering package, cause the max trailering package comes with 3.73s

i was just on gmc.com building one, and you cant even get the 09 1500 w/ 6.0 and 4.10s

I was talking about 07/08s. The NHT in the 07/08s came with 4.10's and the non-NHTs came with 3.73's (my truck in a non-NHT Vmax).

The 09 6.0's have the 6 spd, that is why you can't get the 4.10's. They also dropped the VortecMax name for 09.

If we are talking 09's you don't want 4.10s. Like Jeff said, the 09 6.0's and 6.2's come with a 6 speed.

The 6sp and 3.73 gears will give you more gear than a 4sp with 4.10s

well, if they put 4.10s with the 6l's that'd be pretty ridiculous,

It would be like a "GrannyGear" or like driving in 4lo.

The 6 spd with the 3.42 gears has a higher 1st gear final ratio than a 4 spd with 4.10s.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
