Cruise Control And Engine Over-rev

Recommended Posts

2003 GMC Sonoma ZR2 4.3L Automatic.

I was experiencing a slight vibration in the driveline. Cruise control was engaged and I was on the highway at about 65 MPH. To see if the vibration was engine related, I momentarily selected neutral. The engine immediately over-revved to the speckled red section of the tach, maybe 5500 RPM or so. I dropped back in D quickly.

Questions: Shouldn't the CC have disengaged when I selected N, all my other experiences with CC have the CC disconnect when selecting N. Did I damage the engine going into the speckled red? It didn't peg the tach or even go into the solid red section.

I verified the CC function. CC engaged, about 45 MPH, selected N, engine revs went up and turning off CC engine revs dropped down.

This just doesn't seem right so I'm asking if this is normal behavior for this particular truck.

Thanks.

My 94 Chevy did that when I accidentally knocked it into N on the hwy. Some only disengage when the brake light switch in activated

I would think that the nannies saved your engine, especially if you only did it for a second or two,

thats weird beacuse when i have cruse set and hit the clutch the cruse shuts off. :uhoh:

Mine's an automatic. I think it's just a design flaw since all my other automatics with cruise will disengage if I select N while moving.
