2005 Silverado 4x4 Screeching/hitting Question

Hello,

A question I hope someone can help with. I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 4x4 with approximately 18,000 miles. Recently over the last couple weeks I've noticed a squealing or screeching type noise, sounds kind of like metal to metal coming from the rear of the vehicle when breaking to slow down and also when accelerating from a stop. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger rear wheel. Within the last couple days I've also noticed a slight hitting or knocking noise from the same area after accelerating from a stop and this comes along with the screeching type noise when just crawling along at slow speeds. When reacing 40+ mph there doesn't seem to be any noise.

Anyone have an idea what this could be? Rear drum brakes? Wheel Bearing??

Thanks for any help.

Could be rear brakes, a rear bearing, or could be the rear diff. I know when the rear diff went bad in my '97 it would make a horrible squealing at certain speeds.

I'd get a couple people to ride in the back as you drive around to see if they can help narrow down the location. Or put the truck on a hoist in neutral, manually turn the wheels to see if the noise will appear.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had the truck in at a brakes shop today and they checked it over and said the brakes were fine and it wasn't the source of the noise. Their best guess was u-joint or a carrier bearing and the recommended I take it to the dealer.

I've also determined that the noise doesn't occur when the vehicle is in neutral. Does the u-joint or carrier bearing sound reasonable? What is the typical life on u-joints? Seems like it would be longer than 18,000 miles.

Any other input is appreciated.

Thanks,

im not sure if its the same set up but I had the same prob on my 02 ford. I took it to a brake shop they ripped the tire off looked it over and told me it was all good. After a couple hours of looking found the prob. On my ford the e brake had a differnt set of pads inside the drum and a peice of one broke off. It would get thrown around when driving and squeel when it would get stuck in the drum set up, might not help but for the 10 min it takes i would check it out.

This is a follow up to this issue from back in March. I have this grinding or rattling/hitting type noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, seems to be worse when starting from a stop and accelerating up o around 45mph where it is less noticeable.

After having the place that did the brakes determine they couldn't figure out what it was I took it back to the original Chevy dealer. When the dealer had it and drove it around they didn't hear any noise. They said they checked the brakes, u-joint and didn't see any problems. When I go the track back from them in mid-March I drove it for a month or two and didn't really get much of the noise, but not it is back and seems to be even worse.

I'm thinking about taking it back into the dealer to see if they can find anything but since it is no longer in warranty I'd like to try and find out what it is first so they aren't fixing something that isn't the problem. Anyone have any suggestions? Anything I can check myself? I had a friend suggest it was possibly a wheel bearing, any way I can check this myself easily?

Thanks,

Tim

mipsco,this is a GM trucks site ,cheees,anyways,fords suck,lol

block your wheels in neutral ,safely pull your rear drive shaft and turn the u-joints ,one is seized ,if the noise is a rotational chirp or squeak ,as the torque is applied and twists the diff the u-joint is stressed and chirp chirp chirp ya get ,

good luck
