2001 5.3 Trans And Transfer Case Swap

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm from Alaska and this is my first post on this forum and last weekend up at our cabin my truck got stuck in a little snow on the side of the road trying to load my snowmobile. I have a 2001 gmc sierra z71 package and i think my transfer case was going out since my two front tires would not engage when i was in 4hi or 4lo. Then when i tried to rock my truck out of the snow i rocked it then parked it and dug out some snow around the tires and body then went to go back to rocking but my truck would not engage into gear. However it will still shift between park and neutral but when i go into drive nothing turns including the driveshaft. My main question is that if i do need to replace the whole transmisson and transfer case if a ss trans and transfer case will fit and then i will have awd all the time and i think i will need to retune my computer to recognize the new trans and transfer case. if any one has done this or know any thing about it plese reply.

An SS is an all wheel drive vehicle and therefore doesn't have a t-case...it has a center differential....which is totally different than what your truck has.

It cannot be shifted from 4wd to 2wd, and has no low-range.

Having said that...I'm sure you can swap it into your truck, but it will most definitely not be a direct bolt in.
