General Lee 01
I've read from a reliable source that RCR WILL NOT retire the #3. But the Number 3 will be on a year Hyanis (SP?) from WC this year. It will return next year. If you want to know the site, then PM me.
Guest Friz
I don't know if a team is allowed to permanently "retire" a number. Perhaps if teams were allowed to retire numbers at will, Michael Waltrip would be driving "The #4837 NAPA Chevy Monte Carlo". When Richard Petty's #43 was "retired" it wasput away for one season only. I understand what D.E.'s contribution to NASCAR was, but as a person was his life worth more than Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin, Or Neil Bonnet? Maybe I'm completely off-base on this, y'all don't kill me. General Lee 01
I don't get why they allowed Kenny Irwin's No. 42 to be Retired. Richard Childress said on the site that I read this (Racingone.com), that was the reason he wouldn't retire #3, NASCAR doesn't traditionally retire numbers. Guest Friz
Kenny Irwin's #42 was not retired. Felix Sabattus and Chip Gannassi own it, They are simply opting not to use it at this time. It's my understanding that once a number is purchased by a team from NASCAR, it is theirs. I'm sure that NASCAR has some constraints on the purchase and use of team numbers (or we'd end up with huge numbers like I mentioned earlier), but I'm sure in a case like this, they give car owners some leeway. This is just my best guess on this subject, any help out there?
Frank S
Friz you are definitely right about the value of a life from one person to another but they have to honor DE on the circuit somehow. If not via # retirement then some other way.
