How To Replace Studs?

Recommended Posts

04 2wd Sierra. I Was going to replace the tie rod ends and busted the first stud I hit with the wrench. I heated the rest and soaked them in rust free and plan to use an impact to try and loosen the others.

How do I replace a stud without having to replace the whole hub assembly? Seemed so easy on past 2wd trucks but now sure now with the integrated hub assemblies.

Mike, you'll need a wheel stud press tool to do it. Probably purchase one at any auto parts store. Remove wheel, remove brake caliper, remove rotor, place broken stud at 12 o'clock position and use press tool to remove stud. Press tool looks kind of like a heavy duty C- clamp. Hope that helps and good luck. :smoker:

To hell with that. Knock it out with an air hammer. :jester:

Hey guys, sorry to bump this one back up but I need to double check one thing.

To remove/replace the studs I only need to take the wheel, caliper, and rotor off?

I am asking because I've been spraying the remaining 5 with rust free, then heating the hell out of the nuts and they won't break loose. I've even had the garage try their impact gun and no luck. I have a feeling that I'll be breaking off all 6 and want to be absolutely sure that I can replace them without taking the hub out as I'm worried that I'll break the 3 bolts that hold the hub on. -that's just my luck lately.
