Bigger Tires, Stock Wheels

Recommended Posts

Well the Title says it all. I have 17" stock OEM Wheels and am looking for new rubber. I have leveled the truck so keep that in mind.

Thoughts?

I like bigger and meatier looking if that helps.

Which would be your preference? Wider or taller?

Here is a nice tool to help you compare sizes.

A combination of both. From a side view aspect I suppose taller would be the most impact full.

Well I would have to say BFG A/T T/A tires are great. They are a winter rated tires wich is always good, they are a pretty agressive tread, and look good. I have an 08 Ext-Cab Silvy with a level and put 33" BFg's on and love them, with no rubbing issues. Now going with a bigger tire will make you lose 1-2 MPG or so, just to keep in mind.

Do you have some shots of your truck? We are more or less in the same boat since your are running 4:10's, how do you feel with the tires on? Do you lag now from a stop? how bad is the millage compared to stock?

They feel great, nice and comfy feel to them, they are priced well to. No real lag at all, and it does hurt the mileage, but I think well worth it. Here's a few pics.

Thanks Jon. Those are a pretty good tire. Had a similar set on my old 1995 sierra and also lost about 1-2 mpg but they rode smooth and were fairly quiet.

check out the mickey thompson Baja Mtz radials... they look aggressive.. do great off road.. and ride and wear like champs.. got 35000 miles on my 38x15.5x20's... still ride good and have tread left. they have a bunch of different sizes

Here's another option to look at. I went with 285/70/17 Firestone Destination AT because they are light and cheap and have an excellent reputation. They are the SL load range (nice soft ride), and the lightest duty BFGs you can get are D load range (stiffer ride).

BFGs Load range D 56 to 58 pounds (weight, not air pressure)

Destination ATs Load range SL 44 pounds (weight, not air pressure)

My stock tires are only 33 pounds each, so I just couldn't see adding 22 extra lbs per tire to my 2wd street queen. Extra wear and tear on brakes, etc. Like I said, just another option to consider.

btw- onlinetires.com has even lower prices that tirerack, but some have complained of poor service. They were great for me cuz I picked them up myself, so no shipping charges.

I just put 285/70/17's on my truck yesterday. Are you saying I should be running 56lbs in them? I only have 38lbs in them now, the tire place only put 35lbs in them.

I was referring to the actual weight of the tire itself. One of the BFGs weighs 56 pounds. 22 extra pounds of rotating mass per tire compared to the stock 245/70/17. I'l edit the other post.
