Put On New Shocks Today

Recommended Posts

Ordered some new shocks a while back from oehq.com, decided to put them on today.

When I went into the shop manual I noticed this:

Notice: The front shock absorbers of the vehicle are multifunctional. In addition to contributing to a smooth ride they also provide the only stop to the front suspension when fully extended. Therefore, when servicing the shock absorber, service replacement shock absorbers must be equivalent to original shock absorbers in both extended length and strength. Use of shocks not complying to original equipment or strength could result in suspension over-travel or shock breakage. Suspension over-travel may result in suspension component breakage.

How about that? Is that normal for all vehicles? Regardless, I was glad that I went the route of OEM. Maybe this is only for 2wds?

I've seen some trucks with highly modified suspensions that have straps attached to the A-arms/axle (depending on vehicle) and the frame. They do that on monster trucks, too, in order to stop the suspension from just continuing on. Whether or not it's normal from the factory for most vehicles, I wouldn't know.

Unless you plan on doing a lot of Dukes of Hazzard style jumping, it should not ever be an issue. Those statements are usually created by the legal staff to help cover their asses.
