Gm..why Is Your Q C So Poor ?

 This is a true story...happened today...and shows that GM and their Q/C guys are NOT doing their job...at all.

Mon night at dealership...we get a brand-spanking NEW 09 Sierra 1500 Ext Cab 4x4 with all options...$45xxx truck...turns out is is specail-ordered and already SOLD. Customer was waiting 8 weeks for truck to arrive.

Service Dispatch gave me the truck this morning to do the PDI and install the oval step tubes. OK...all is well...until I put the truck up in the air. I take a brief look at the oil pan...and with ONLY 4 MILES ON THE TRUCK, the whole bottom of the oil pan is soaked with oil. If it was my purchase, I thought to myself, I'd be FURIOUS.

I grab a 15mm wrench, and try to turn the oil pan drain plug. Loose. Leaking oil. Never tightened correctly at the factory. What else can I say.

So, tightened it up, cleaned the pan, and topped up the oil. Shaking my head the whole time...WTF does the factory NOT look for. :D

On a side topic, this truck is an Ext Cab 4x4, with a 6.0, 6-speed, and every option available. I've seen alot of posts questioning the 6-speed vs. 4-speed battle. I'll tell you guys I'd rather have the 4-speed any day. Why? This new truck, acceleration-wise, fell flat on it's face from idle up to 40mph. 40mph and above it was *slightly* on the peppy side. But damn...this is one pig of a truck. Didn't want to go anywhere in the city...and was CONSTANTLY busy-shifting while cruising at a steady speed. Yuck.

Q/C is important... But at least you found it before the guy taking delivery did.

The 6-speed seems to be a love/hate relationship depending on who's driving it. I've heard both arguments.

I drove a 2500 and a denali with the 6-speed and I was pretty impressed... but liked the 4-speed over the 6-speed due to all the shifting. With that said, there were later updates to the software that I read about that was suppose to make it better.

Intown driving the 6-speed just shifted to much for my liking... and at the time, I liked the 4-speed better.

But I did like the manual shift controls.

Do all 6-speeds have manual shift or just the 2500's?

Hmmm, that's odd, my 6.0's oil drain plug is 13mm.

That is indeed odd, as every modern GM I've owned as been 15mm..

1998 LS1 Camaro

2000 5.3L Silverado

2000 grand prix GTP (SC 3.8)

2008 5.3L Silverado

Haven't done the oil myself on the Acadia, but I'm willing to to bet a crisp one dollar bill that it's a 15mm as well :dunno:

Maybe the 13mm oil plug is part of the disc brake package? :puke:

No, I am guessing it has to do with the cast aluminum oil pan, so you are less likely to over-torque it with a larger socket.

Very possible. The Camaro had an aluminum pan too, but it was also only the second year of the gen IIIs. They made lots of minor tweaks and that may well be one of them. It'll be interesting to see if anyone else here does their own oil and can report back or if it's a Jiffy Lube world around here :puke:

I change my own. I just did it on Thursday. Definitely 13mm on mine.

My 2001 LS1 Camaro has a 15mm (wrench size) drain plug.
