Intermittent 4wd Problem

Every once in a while (maybe once a month), my 4WD acts up. Upon starting the truck, the switch on the dash will illuminate the red neutral light. The light remains on. The truck is in 2WD, though.

If you push any of the buttons on the 4WD switch, the red neutral light stays on and the light for the pushed button will flash for about 30 seconds, but the truck remains in 2WD, no shift is made. I've listened under the truck at the transfer case while the button is being pushed. It doesn't sound like any shift is being attempted.

No "service 4WD" message is ever displayed.

I recently replaced the dash switch to try to resolve this problem. However, the switch does not appear to be the problem.

Any advice? Thanks!

Sounds like it's time to replace the switch. It's not an uncommon thing to go wrong. They are pretty cheap and easy to replace.

I already replaced the switch. I still have the problem.

I had the same problem with my 05. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the Encoder Motor Sensor and have not had any problems since. Apparently it is a known problem with these trucks

I agree with the above post - go after the sensor first. I just went through the same routine as my truck was having problems but actually stuck in 4WD. I repalced the entire encoder motor - that didn't fix it. Ended up being the Transfer Case Control Module - a very expensive repair.

Try that sensor.
