I have a 98 silverado, 5.7 5-speed, with just over 35000 miles, I noticed the other day when i take off from a stop or move in reverse, I hear a snapping type noise undernieth... could this be u joints?? they look original, cant tell tho. any other things this could be?? I pulled out in traffic the other day and speed shifted it, Im hoping I didnt damage anything??? I would think these are built to withstand some abuse right?? any light on the subject would be great

Since I can't hear your "snapping" noise there is no way to say for sure, but, they can make a noise like that when they are bad. They may also squeak when you start or stop. Sometimes they clunk. If your U joints are the non-grease type they could be bone dry inside. If you pull the shaft you'll be able to spot if any of them are bad

ok I'll check that, like I said they are 11 years old so its quite possible they're dry. I really hope thats it.

if you want to check the joints, slide under and see if theres any play. a sign of a bad joint a lot of times is rust coloration around the bottom of the cap area. there should be no play when you grab the drive shaft and try to twist it back and forth.
