My new place is in an area that isn't serviced by DSL or Cable for internet service...So in order to keep up with my GM-Trucks.com scoops and post whoring...I certainly can't go with dialup. So I'm left with pretty much satellite.

 

$199 install/equip/lease/deposit/whateverthehellit'sfor....AND a TWO YEAR contract at $80 a month for 1.5 mbs down and abysmal upload speeds? Are you freakin' kidding me?

 

It'll probably be BORKED in bad weather too.

 

And don't get me started on how confuddled I am with satellite TV packages involving HD DVR...GRRRRRRRRRRR.

That's just it...It's not REALLY the boonies. Just a little outside of town. And Cox as well as TDS have drops within less than 1/2 mile from my street. Which makes me NOT want to get roped into a 2 year contract with these guys.

I have two family members on satellite. I hope you have better luck with it than they have. If you don't and are feeling stabby now, you'll be feeling shooty later.

 

My experience with them made DSL/cable a requirement when we were house shopping.

Have you considered one of the internet cards from Verison or Sprint that use cell service? My wife had a Verison card for her laptop for a while when we were traveling a lot, it ran her about $59.95 a month for unlimited access.

 

I'm in the middle of a big dispute with DickTV right now, what a bunch of crooks! I would avoid them at all cost!

 

I've been told there is a company that sells satillite receivers that will pull a signal from the existing satellites, with no monthly stranglation fees from DickTV or Douche Network, I'll have to do some research. From what I've been told it's perfectly legal because they sell you the equipment so it does not belong to either of the mega-rip-off satellite monopolies! You're just receiving a signal that's being broadcast over open air waves...

It was on the list of priorities, but the 3 car garage PLUS a nice shop was higher up on that list. :lol:

yeah...that would definitely trump it here as well :lol: Definitely look into the cell modem option. I have a Verizon unit that i use at datacenters and for travel. It's pretty fast, all things considered.

And? If you have that much stuff in the house, I'm going to guess that you're into it enough to know that you could easily use one system as a router/firewall to share the connection :lol:

Try to run VPN through satellite, ... now that's excruciating!! You'll have better luck with a mobile broadband card, like Paul mentioned.

Well the problem with that is...I've got 4 PC's, a server, and three laptops. :lol:

 

They make wireless routers for the mobile broadband setups. You'd have to buy a lot of wireless NIC's but it is possible.

 

 

You'd only have to make it wireless if you wanted to :lol:

ANYthing that requires two-way communication sucks through satellite. The latency just kills everything.
