More Firearms Talk...

For the longest time I've wanted to go get a desert eagle. I've seen them online and thought they looked sweet, and being a bigger than average joe I figured it wouldn't be grossly oversized for me. Last week I was finally able to get my hands on one at Outdoor world and talk to the guy about it. After just racking the slide and holding this gargantuan block of metal I decided that it wouldn't be a practical gun to fire, and I'm not ready to start collecting them just for fun. So now I'm back to the drawing board as to what I want to get.

So now I'm looking for a .45ACP. I'd like to get one that's designed around the USSOCOM guidelines, and I've more or less narrowed it down to the Springfield XD-Tactical, or a Taurus 24/7-OSS. I really like that size of gun and that kind of style, and I've fired the Springfield. I just wanted to get anyone's opinion on either gun if you've shot them/owned them, or if you've got any other suggestions that I haven't looked at. I keep getting mixed reviews about Taurus - some saying they're bad, always have and always will, and some saying that their quality is pretty good these days on their newer firearms. H&K seems a *little* too pricey for what I've found so far.

The XD's are extremely well made and excel in every single category. I have an XD9 and will get the 45ACP at some point. You will not be disappointed. That said, I would strongly recommend the Springfield 1911. If you ever shoot one you will be hooked for life. It probably is America's number one sweetheart of pistols.

Not a big fan of the Deagles, either. When they shoot, it's fun for about a mag.

I think everyone has been clear on their JSOC/JCP pistol. HK would've won, I'm sure. The new HK 45 is a good looking handgun. I was very close to picking it over the Glock 21SF. I love my Glocks, what can I say... Hell, I take pictures of them.

I'd also look at the Sig P220 Combat. Not only is it beautiful, it'll shoot. It doesn't have the polymer lower and a few other things, but it is a work of art.

The XD, as I understand it, is a good weapon. I've only fired one and did not care for it., Again, I'm a Glock guy. A buddy at work swears by them and hates Glock.

Taurus? Best warranty in the business. Great customer relations. Good product. Not the best on the planet, mind you, but they are a good, decent company. When I worked a gun counter years ago they were always willing to assist their customers no matter the issue - from actual issues to gun bunnies who thought they knew more than the pro's.

Best bet? Find a range that will allow you to rent weapons and shoot them all. A general rule of thumb in this industry is you get what you pay for.

The big thing that's keeping me from already getting the XD is that I'm not a huge fan of the trigger safety or the grip pressure safety, and this gun has both of them.

I looked at the sig briefly, but I didn't see the combat one where I was at, so I'll have to look into that too. There's a knife/gun show here in a couple weeks and I'm going to go to it hoping to see the 2 (or 3) that I really like and hold them to see which one feels better in my hand. If I can find a range that rents them I'll go to try the others out.

You asked for opinions so here is another one.

Stay away from Taurus. The XD isn't a bad piece.

I'd spend the extra money and go for a Kimber or H&K.

Have 2 Springfields,

XD9 Sub Compact - 3"- Carry pistol, small, easy to conceal even with the high cap mag.

XD 45ACP Service - 4"- The don't come in the back door if not invited pistol.

Both well made for the price, no problems , 1000's of rounds through both with no problems at all.

Looked at the Tactical 45 but felt front heavy. If you really want a Tactical size go for it. If you get a chance look at the 45ACP compact. 4" but can be concealed with the smaller magazine. With the full size mag is just like the Service model ( may trade in the my service model for this one)

Hope this helps.

Dang it, Chris. I had finally gotten over wanting the P220 Elite.

Sorry. My bad.

:nonod:

They really expanded the Elite line. I think I might pick up a 229 or 226 Elite Dark. Unfortunately, we're mandated to the .40...no .45.
