Considering Torsion Keys - Which Ones?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Yukon XL (4WD) which I am considering adding the torsion keys to level the front end. I do not want to add a 'leveling kit' b/c every one that I have seen lifts the front higher than the rear, which I do not want. I considered adjusting the torsion bars, but have been recommended against that by some b/c it will change its riding characteristics.

It has also been mentioned to me that adding torsion keys is a good and viable alternative. The only problem is that I was unable to find much using the search function on the specifics of the necessary keys (e.g. model number, installation, etc.).

My goal: level the front end (e.g. raising it about 1"). Does anyone have any advice for a novice? What type of keys to go with (Ford was one recommendation, but I don't know which ones to order), for example.

I do not go 'off-road' in the sense that many here do, but will take it on light camping trails. Most of my driving is commuting (not the best commuting vehicle, I know, but I have always had a passion for these vehicles).

Your assistance is appreciated!

Re-indexed torsion keys do the EXACT same thing to the front suspension as using the adjustment bolt with the stock keys. The only thing both do, is twist the torsion bar so that the suspension is forced further down within it's range of travel. Both affect the geometry exactly the same. Both affect the ride quality exactly the same. 1" of crank is 1" of crank no matter what key is in the truck.

I'd suggest cranking your stock keys. Most will be able to get 1.5" of height just by adjusting the adjustment bolt, which is as high as you'd want to go (any higher, and the ride will really be trashed, and you'll wear through suspension and steering components quickly).

Any adjustment of the torsion bars will stiffen the ride some, but 1" shouldn't make the ride un-bearable. If you don't like it though, you can always de-crank, and the only thing you lose is some time, and the cost of an alignment or two (an alignment is necessary any time adjustments are made to the front suspension).
