A Week With The Bear

I have over 300 miles on my Black Bear tune, it's been about a week. I have to say, it is awesome. It takes less throttle to get the same affect as before.

I now feel like I'm in tune with my truck because it actually does what I want not what it wants. Justin does amazing work; completely changed the personality of the truck. A tune is the best thing to happen to this truck.

I filled up about 50 miles after I got the tune and I averaged 16 mpg over that tank, even though I was doing about 75-80 coming home plus all the WOT runs for the tune. So I'm hoping to see a better increase once I stop having all the fun with the tune. I'll be filling up with 89 octane soon because I want to see what that will give me since he gave me an 87/89 tune for the low/high octane tables.

Sounds like another happy Black Bear customer! I'm very happy with my tune also, and echo the same comments....the throttle response is amazing,my truck actually "GOES" when I press the gas pedal now!!!!

When I first got the tune I liked it, but I was preoccupied with all the pinging from the lousy tank of gas I had. The new tank cleaned that all up. I wasn't able to fully enjoy it for a few days because of that.

I have noticed this already on my new truck, it seems like a dog off the start but hits hard in the midrange?

The other day I was trying to pick up speed getting on the hwy and I could believe how sluggish it was initially, then when midrange kicked it, it pulled hard and I was doing 140km's/h in no time but I hate the initial take off.

Does this Black Bear kit take care of exactly what I am talking about? Is the kit a do it yourself type job or is a mechanic req'd with some speciallity tools?

Now I have to ask, what about warranty issues, I only have 700 miles, it's a new 09?

Cool, they ship to Canada too!!

It's a new computer that a tuner tunes. With Black Bear, Justin is the tuner, he can do in person tunes, mail order tunes, and data logging tunes. For any of them he sends you new computers and you choose to keep your stock ones or send yours back, keeping them costs a little more.

Being sluggish off the line is only 1 of many things that GM has done to your truck to cripple it. Get going, stomp on the gas, 4 seconds will pass until it fully opens the throttle plate. It will pull even better if you get a tune. My truck now pulls well from 0 to 90. It no longer has the "Chevy shake" that Justin calls it. Torque management (the thing preventing you from opening the throttle when you say go) can be reduced/elilminated. There are many other things he can do, if you search they will all come up.

The only special tools you would need access to would be a high end scanner if you got the mail order or data logging tune, you need to do a crank angle sensor relearn.

For warranty, it's on a dealership by dealership basis. If you keep your stock computers and swap them out when you go for service, it's going to be hard for them to deny service, not saying impossible. Some guys on here drive in with the tuned computers and the dealer doesn't say anything to them.

Not quite.

The 4 sec delay is a PE (Power Enrichment) delay. Meaning when you go WOT, the engine waits 4 secs to enter Power Enrichment Mode (aka open loop). Engines normally run in closed loop mode, meaning the computer is receiving signals from various sensors and adjusting timing, fuel, etc accordingly for optimum efficiency. During Open Loop (Power Enrichment), the engine is simply running as much fuel/air as it can take for maximum power (like the good ole days  ).

Always seemed like there was a long delay before it actually went WOT. I guess that may be the PE not kicking in. All I know is that it was hell.

Yeah, it was hell for sure. There are several nannies that cause it. DBW (Drive by wire) allows them to let the truck decide how fast to accelerate. Throttle rate is not 1:1 with pedal position.

Stomping the pedal would cause the computer to pull timing and fuel to prevent "abuse". That is what you felt the most. PE Delay is minor in comparison.

Thanks for the info, after I was finished posting my last thread I noticed the link on the left side, seems they do Canadian orders too.

What really ticks me off with this new truck is taking off from a dead or, like I stated trying to pick up speed getting on the hwy.

Today on my way to work in heavy traffic, the cars in front of me quickly acclerated away from me, I got into to keep up with the flow but as soon as you do you have to brake as it has eccelerated too much in the midrange! It is frustrating and it is driving me nuts already, I really don't see how it is saving gas if that is what they are trying to do with this set-up?

I do have the 20" tires/wheels which I know take a bit to get rolling but I figured with the 3.73's it should have no problems pulling away?

I may just look into this further but the warranty issue right now scares me? Not sure if it is worth the chance?..........Irv
