Got My New Truck.....now What?

Well, I got a steal of a deal on my 09 Carbon Black Sierra Crew Cab Z71. I held back a few bucks on the loan to pay for a few add ons. Now here is my delima......On my 01 sierra, I had a leer bed cover. I loved it when I needed it, until that is the lock would never work, and the gasket would never stay glued, and the hinges were not that great either. I am sure since then bed covers have improved. NOW....I am having a real hard time deciding between another bed cover, or a low profile tool box, or nothing at all.

I am going to have sprayed with linex, probably over the rails....and I want to put a black powder coated bull bar on the front. Also looking black powder coated 3" tubular steps. Vent shades and bug guard if I can find one.

Any opinions? I have never had a tool box. I do know with the short box I wont have much room left in the bed.

Oh....and I want to add a leveling kit. I know a lot of you guys have used the rough country with great results. With that kit, do you have to have the truck realigned?

IMO, yes on the level kit (get it realigned), no bed cover, no tool box, yes on the linex, no bull bar, yes on the steps, no vent shades, no bug guard. but this is all subjective.

Congrats on the new truck and welcome to the CBM paint club. I just purchased an ext cab, same color. Mine came with the factory running boards and a factory tonneau, (link below) to give you an idea?

I recently purchased a Extand Trifecta tonneau for my 97 Sierra before I sold it and I preferred it a lot more than this factory tonneau! Anyways, have a look and hopefully it will help you decide..........Irv

Look at undercoverinfo.com for the bed cover. I used one on my 2001 silverado and love it. It matches the rest of the black plastic on the truck, easy to remove, lockable, don't have to worry about chipping the finish off it, and not too expensive.

Yes on vent shades (these make a big difference on letting a little air in the truck or a ton of air without them. Also a good way to keep the black truck cooler in the summer by cracking the window when you park it), Yes on bug shield (the front of the hood is a huge flat surface to get smacked up by rocks otherwise), no to assists, and maybe on bull bar. Don't know about the leveling kit never used one.

Thanks for the replies. I went by a local shop yesterday and priced a few things. The guy there had mentioned the rough country 3" lift. Now....how would that ride. I would like to keep the feel of the stock ride.

Ive actually have almost talked myself out of lifting or leveling my truck. Too much confusion for someone new to truck accessories.

Too many people having issues with Rough County lifts. There's one current one floating around right now. People telling him "told you so."

I wouldn't mess with it.

Thanks guys....no rough country lifts.

Local shop will install the leveling kit for 200 bucks, that includes re-alignment.

Get an Undercover bed cover - I got mine from Autoanything.com (shipping to my door was only an additional $69.00). It has quick releases to take it off and comes with hardware so you can hang it on your garage wall when not in use. You can stand on it, or strap a load on top of it if you need to.

The low profile toolbox for the CMS takes up about 2 feet of bed space. The Undercover does clear the top of the box, but you will need to slide the box at least 1/2 way towards the rear in order to open it.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
