I just moved from Ontario to Alberta, and radar detectors are legal here... so I've decided to pick one up.

Truth be told, I know absolutely nothing about them... what detectors are good? and which ones should I avoid??

Beltronics, Valentine, and Escort are all fairly good. Escort and Beltronics are the same company. The more expensive within these brands usually have more features.

We have an Escort and have been happy with it.

Ford?

I like the Cobra brand, but I have a Rocky Mountain Jammer/detector

I have the newest ESCORT,The Passport 9500iX.

I had a Passport 8500 before that,and a Passport 4500 before that one.

They've saved my butt many a times!!!! Although I don't tend to drive as fast as I use to anymore,I guess I'm just getting old!

+1 on the newest ESCORT,The Passport 9500iX. It has GPS setting and can remember the red light camera locations and green light speed traps. Also has a remembering GPS silence function for when you pass places like power transformers that set it off. But, it will recognize if there is a sneaky peace officer hiding in one of those area's. Crazy tech and you can find them for under $600. But I just got the 8500 and am happy with it

Some times you can get a good buy on E-Bay. Just have to keep an eye out, that and Craigslist.

Everyone I know loves the Valentine. I've got a few friends with a K40 who swear by them. I like the K40 because you can install it and all you'll see are the indicator lights wherever you place them - No idea how well they work. I looked and looked over at the E90post forums earlier and couldn't find the post I wanted. Someone there years ago posted pics of their stealth install where the cigarette lighter twisted to turn the detector on and he had the LEDs placed in his instrument panel. It was a killer install.

There are tons of reviews online. Google them. Be advised, when I'm running radar, I don't think I've ever not gotten a reading on someone who was running a jammer. Sure, the jammers work by giving you a small amount of time to react to slow. I'll get an error reading then a speed pops up. I know they are running a jammer at that point. Just FYI.

I'll stick with my FOP tag and no radar. Back in my youth, I had much more luck with a CB tuned to 19 than any detector I owned.

Legal jammers don't work. I had an X50 stolen a couple of years ago (found out he sold it through Ebay, so be aware of a really good deal) and got another one. I love it. But I would like to see how a Valantine One works.

I used to use an Escort detector everywhere I went. These days, cops here use laser for everything (no old school radar stuff anymore) so a detector is useless. Once a laser "detector" lights up you are already busted.

My Escort saved me about a million dollars back when radar was king though! Might still be useful in rural areas.
