Rear Shocks, Need Help Please.

Hi guys, I never installed shocks before. My question is, Do i just crawl under the rear of my truck and remove the two bolts and take out the shock, or do i need to support the truck or something? Does the new shock just slides right in or is there more to it? BTW its a 2004 sierra 4x4 1500. Thanks

It's pretty much as you described it. No jack needed. You may need to manipulate the shock position a little by hand to get the bolts in but nothing more needed.

 

I would suggest you put a little grease on the bolt and a light coating of white lithium grease over the rubber bushing. This keeps the bolt from rusting out and keeps sand and dirt out from between the rubber, and the shock, and the bolt. Generally this is where you will start to get squeaks from.

 

For an added flare you could also paint your shocks the color of your truck to class it up a bit. If your truck is not raised it's not worth it.

 

You should be done in one hour max. Easy job.

The shocks will want to expand though (fully extend the cylinder). So if you dont use a jack, make sure you are in a safe position before removing the bolts. I always put the truck frame on jackstands and lower the rear diff with a floor jack. It makes for easier access as well.

Same story with me....I just ordered a full set of Bilstein HD's, and I've never done a shock job before. But I've been studying up and I hear it's pretty easy. I don't have a floor jack, but plan to buy one tomorrow just in case I need to compress the piston before bolting it up. But this thread suggests I shouldn't have to do that on the rear's ? That's a pleasant surprise!
