6.0 Engine Knock

Recommended Posts

I posted earlier about a ticking noise at an idle, on my 2001 2500HD with a 6.0 I tried to figure out if it was the engine or transmission but the flex plate inspection cover won't come off with out dropping the exhaust, so now I was wondering if I can unhook my knock sensor and run it to see of it rattles more ......

i would guess unhooking the knock sensors would reduce knock and shaking if there is any. Because it will make the ECU retard timing. Alot of 6.0's have a rough idle sometimes tunes or new intake and throttle body gaskets can help, MAF and throttle body cleaning too. But overall that the nature of the beast :smoker: . If its a ticking sound some good leads are, CSK (search if tons of info), an exhaust leak, or valvetrain--lifter noise.

try your best to describe the sound u hear

+1...a friend of a friend is a Chevy tech and did a complete run through on my truck when I thought the idle was getting a little rough. I take very good care of my truck and he found no system issues at all. His comment was the same. After about 55,000-60,000 you'll notice the idle get a little rough but it should/will not effect performance. Aside from the idle I agree, performance is still great and truck drives very smooth at 78,000 miles. "Nature of the Beast" is correct my friend!

I was told my rough idle was plugs n wires. They also said that could help with the CEL resulting from random cylinder misfires everytime I get on the highway and do 60 mph...

I'm not having a rough idle issue I have a tick or knock that I want to diagnose as an engine or transmission issue, so If I can disconnect the sensor for a minute to see if it get worse or not..

There is probably nothing wrong with it. There aren't many 6.0s that don't tick from somewhere.

Amen to that. Mine makes a few goofy noises all the time. But each time I turn the key it fires right up and gets ready for its torture test.

you can unhook them with no long term effects but i bet you will get an SES light and a code. But once you hook them back up and clear it it will be back to normal. The knock sensor connector is on the drivers side of the intake clipped on the rear upper corner it will be black and have blue accent pieces of plastic.

but i really doubt you have a detonation problem ticking is 99% of the time an exhaust leak or noisy valve train.
