Front Brake Problem

Recommended Posts

Ok I have a 98 Sierra. I have owned the truck for 3-1/2 years and put roughly 67K on it. I am about to put on my third set of rotors because the other set is warped yet again. Are these trucks notorious for warping rotors or am i just buying the wrong rotors?

I know in the case of rotors you get what you pay for.I bought rotors(Raybestos Aimco-GS) and Raybestos pads(SuperStop) and spent $125.00 total.I know this seems cheap but all I could spend at the time.I installed 'em last Nov. and have put maybe 10,000 miles on 'em and all is good. The pads have alot of meat still. We'll see how long they last. There is a break in procedure, are you doing it properly?

edit: you should do a search, there are many threads concerning rotors

The last two times it was done by two different shops. So it's worth spending more money on pads and rotors I take it.

Yes,there are alot of guys here who have specific wants when it comes to brakes.I would have loved to buy the best money could buy but went with what I bought because I've always had good luck with what Kragen sells. In fact I believe O'Reillys bought Kragen and I've heard good things about them.

Are you hard on braking? Have over sized tires?

Another issue, are you braking in the pads/rotors correctly?

This is an easy fix,

Use a torque wrench on your wheeles make sure they are all torqued the same and to factory specs. If the wheeles are installed and not equal, as the rotors heat up, they will warp. I had the same problem with my 98 silverado and when I started this, my problems went away and I have had the same set of rotors for 4 years now.

The tires are speced for the truck 245 75 16. They were bought back in December and have been rotated every 6K. How do i break in the pads and rotors properly ?

On my 1998, warped 2 sets in 40k, next set were cross drilled and metallic pads. ALSO took on the heat shield. It is small on the 4X4 trucks, like six inches. got a little more air in there. Added 60k to the brakes.
