Rear Axle/diff Leaking And Paint Peeling On '07?

Recommended Posts

I have an '07 Sierra with 18k miles and I just noticed the diff is all rusted, the paint has peeled off, and it looks like the fill plug has been leaking slightly. I haven't abused this thing, it's been used 95% for highway driving. Do you think GM will fix this for me under warranty?

Take it in there, worst they can say is nope.

I live quite a ways away from the dealer so I'd prefer to know before I make the effort.

Get the rear end coated with some mud and let it dry.....you wont even notice the peeling paint!

Seriously though, GM rear ends on every truck that I have bought have come from the factory with a coat of "rust" protection. What do your lower control arms look like?

Yea that is def. not normal, on my previous truck my differential cover gasket leaked, they changed the gasket under warranty. My rear axle on it was also looking a little less than desired and the mechanic put a nice coat of black spray paint on it for me, actually lasted for a while. Yours is way worse than mine was though. When I bought my new truck I did actually see a few vehicles with rear ends that were already rusting and paint peeling, needless to say I didn't buy any of those. It's worth a try, I would think they could help you out somehow.

Think it's possible that the gears were set up wrong and have been running hot?

it looks like the paint is peeling off cause there has been overheating, if you are still under warranty I will take it to the dealer to have it checked out.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to push with the dealer.

damn, yours looks like it is DECADES old. mine has a few spots here and there and that is with 40K on the clock.

Yeah, I bought it in late December of 2007 so I've only had it for a little over a year and a half.

I forgot to update y'all; the dealer replaced the cover with a new one under warranty. It's nice and purty now. :shakehead:
