Slip Yoke Leak

Has anyone run into this problem? I have a 2000 k-2500 with the 6.5 turbo and a 5 speed that I thought was leaking at the rear output shaft seal on the trans case. I replaced 2 seals and still had the leak. The slip yoke was not worn at the seal area ( no gouges ) and was well within operating clearances, but still the leak! While I was under the truck yet again today I noticed that the fluid cast off from the seal was not where it should be and that the seal itself was still dry. On further investigation I found that the slip yoke was actually leaking at the u-joint side. Is there a plug at the end of the yoke splines or is it a solid machined piece? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

A hole can develop in the yoke where you describe. I've seen some people spot weld the area to seal it back up.

Thanks for the info, I've never seen this happen before. Will welding the yoke have any adverse effects on fit or balance?
