Service Stability Dic, Traction And Abs Light On

Recommended Posts

Posted

2004 Suburban, 135,300 miles. No problems for months. When I started the truck yesterday the Traction Control and ABS lights came on and the DIC had a Service Stability message. I check for OBD codes and there aren't any. I turned off and restarted the truck and and nothing changed. Same messages, etc.

Should I disconnect the battery for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the computer to reset as suggested in other posts? Where do I look for problems? Are there ABS sensors in each wheel that should be checked?

Thanks.

most consumer code scanners are only set to read "P" codes (Powertrain), the codes you are looking for will not be in that set of codes so it won't recognize it. It's been a while, but I think it's "B" (Body) codes you are looking for. That being said, there is a code if the lights are on, you just can't access it.

ABS sensor is a possibility.

I'm not sure on the SUV's, but on the trucks a 2004 has two ABS sensors, one on each wheel, and the rear wheel speed is measured from the Vehicle Speed sensor on the transmission tail shaft.

Thanks, Nick. I'll see if I can get the code(s)read. They may be C (chassis) codes.

Yes, any dtc's for the abs, traction or stability systems (along with electronic suspension systems) will have a "C" designation.

Get them scanned and let us know what you find.

Any luck with this? My '04 Yukon XL does the same thing.

I haven't had a chance to look underneath or have the codes read. I'll be able to do that on Monday or Tuesday and I'll report what I find.

Thanks,

Frank.

I had the codes read on the 2004 Suburban this morning and here they are:

C0110: Pump Motor or Motor Circuit Fault (I checked the 60 amp ABS fuse and it is OK),

C0195: Yaw Rate Circuit Fault,

C0455: Steering Wheel Position Sensor Fault.

Also the Snap On code reader indicated that the speed sensors for all of the wheels indicated that every wheel was going 5 mph. It wasn't moving.

The tech cleared the codes and they returned immediately.

Anyone have ideas about where to start looking? It would be great if it was just a corroded connector or a fuse!

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like it has a power or ground supply issue. Clean grounds 110 (opposite side of the frame rail as the abs unit) and make sure all the grounds are on the frame end at G100 (drivers frame tip in the front right behind the bumper). If all of those are ok, you might have a abs pump motor pulling everything else down. If that's the case, unbolt the ebcm from the hydraulic unit, plug it back in and see which codes reset. A regular 'ol halogen headlamp bulb works best for making sure the ebcm has adequate power and ground supply to it.

Thanks, ChevyTech77. I check all that out, see what happens and report back.

Maybe it's a moisture/temperature issue. Mine has quit now that most of the snow is melted and dry and it's a couple degrees warmer.

I plan on checking all that out today as it has finally stopped raining. I don't think it is temperature related as it doesn't get that cold here.

ChevyTech77, if I unbolt the EBCM from the top of ABS pump motor hydraulic unit will I lose any brake fluid? With the igntion key in the on position could I feel the pump motor running? Presently I don't hear or feel anything when I touch the abs pump motor housing when the key is on.

Thanks.

You do have the salt air, humidity....probably causing a gremlin or two. :uhoh:

Gremlins, salt air, salt water (we launch a boat) and humidity. All so true.

Well, I checked and cleaned all the grounds. No apparent corrosion or broken wires. I also unpluged the EBCM wire connector from the EBCM body and cleaned all the contacts with spray electrical cleaner. I reconnected it and there wasn't any change. I don't have a reader for chassis codes so I don't know if any codes were reset.

I guess it's off to the dealer for a complete analysis.

Well, I just received the answer that I suspected but hoped I woudn't hear. The ABS pump motor is frozen up so the entitre ABS unit has to be replaced at a cost of $945. It seems that the 2004 Suburbans and Yukon XLs with Stabilitrak have the most expensive ABS unit of all the full size trucks that year. Just my luck.
