What did you do to your "other" car (aka musclecar) today
Jsdirt replied to RyanbabZ71's topic in The Off-Topic Bar
BEAUTIFUL!! That a Cutlass F85? Or 442? My side-ID skills are lacking thanks to failing memory, lol. Love that color & year, too! Yeah I was never big on entering my own stuff, but I always liked seeing what everyone had, the rare models, and what's been modified. That was always fun. These days I have barely enough time to do what needs to be done at home. Oddly enough, here in MA there are more car shows than ever in history! You'd think up here it would be dead, but it's bigger than EVER! Took the 940 for its maiden voyage with the carburetor. At first I couldn't get out of the yard! This originally had the "Bosch" system (our other 940 has Regina - single fuel pump in fuel tank, and space-age-looking ignition coil on driver's fender) - that has dual fuel pumps. One in the tank, and one under the center left of the vehicle. I had unplugged the external one thinking I wouldn't need it with the carburetor ... but the way I have the pressure regulator hooked up, 90% of the fuel volume is going back to the fuel tank, so cranked all the way down, the regulator is only supplying a hair above 3.5 PSI to the carb. Turns out the in-tank pump (15 PSI alone, instead of 45) couldn't handle the load. Plugged it back in and went for a rip. Ran great! Throttle response is always amazing with carburetors. ZERO delay that no FI system can reproduce. Also fires up in half the crank rotations as before. Low end power was DRAMATICALLY improved. There was an ongoing lean issue with the FI that I got tired of figuring out, so this is a MASSIVE improvement! Above 50 MPH on hills it feels SUPER weak, though. This is more than likely due to the timing not being advanced enough by the computer, since it believes there are multiple failures. I can live with that through the winter. Will keep me from passing slowpokes where I shouldn't and getting speeding tickets at least. -

I like driver quality. I bought a 64 elcamino a few years ago. All original as it turned out. I didn’t know at the time. I made a low ball offer and got it. Black on black factory air 4 speed. It drove like a school bus. It had been awhile I had forgotten just how bad the old cars drove. So I planned on making it more of a retro ride. I would drive it to work sometimes. My brother liked to build cars, I liked to drive them race them. So he noticed the canister oil filter and open blow by tube. He checked the numbers. All original. 327, 250 hp close 4 speed, posi rear end. I put it on eBay made a tidy profit. I didn’t want the responsibility or headache. My wife already had a pristine collector vehicle. It lives in the climate controlled garage. I really don’t care what it is. I like to feel the sensation of speed. Let someone else have the responsibility. I’m too OCD. It used to drive me crazy. I can appreciate people who like to take the responsibility. I’m glad they do. I’ll look and remember back to those days. I’ll jump in the wife’s Genesis to get gas for her. Get my sensation of speed and be happy for awhile. -

I’ve had plenty of nice cars but car shows have never really been my thing personally. I’d much rather be driving or wrenching. But over the years I’ve noticed they are dying out. This one has even been canceled in the past. Hate to see that happen so I brought my Olds out for the afternoon. If turnout was really bad I had the TRX on standby too but thankfully quite a few nice rigs showed up. Nice people too. I may be converted. - Today

Until the engine is on the verge of overheating. Started after a few times taking the positive battery cable off and on. Now no high speed with ac or normal operation. Bmc error and air bag codes. Went to a local shop and they were able to ramp it up with a computer. They suggested bad grounds. Cleaned them still the issue persist. At the point I want to run a relay and battery voltage to the fans. Anyone know what wire on the fans gets full voltage?

My bad. Forgot the 4.6 came out in `91 in the Town Car, and `92 for the Crown and Merc. -

if the brakes are good and you keep an eye on them, just disable the stupid thing and call it a day. You can pick each set and disable it in the menu on the dash just to see if it stops the annoying nagging prompt. -
2027 Which 2027 engine will you choose?
Grumpy Bear replied to Zane's topic in Gen VI Small Block V8 (5.7L & 6.6L)
All the OEM's have taken so many pickles out of the jar they are selling empty jars and we are still buying them. What's to discuss? Your handle and your beliefs seem a mismatch Kidding. There are many failure modes and a few of them do show up early or not at all. Hardness for example. Others like cyclic stress failures, (valve springs not in coil bind but breaking anyway) are baked into the OEM cake. Those take a preset number of cycles which will be reached by different operators (miles). Load stresses are allot like cyclic stress but in the hands of a guy like me may never be exceeded while a guy who bought to use as advertised may get it to tap out on the first tow or haul or excursion into the offroad. There is a whole universe in between. Until the death of the Buick 3800 and Ford 300 I-6 I used to believe that if you got it to 10K without a materials or lubrication related failure then how long it lasted was up to you and not the product. Today....not so much. They are building down to an ever reduced expectation driven by building down and there just isn't anything to be excited about. -

The 2027 orders will be starting up soon, I'm surprised at how quiet these new engine discussions have become. Maybe it's because the HDs will still have the older 6.6 gasser until 2029 model year. When 2027 GMC Sierra HD Production Is Scheduled To Start -

Thanks for the info. I'm doing an oil change today or tomorrow, so I'll check them then. -
The extra plug in connector servers two purposes - to connect the lighting circuits from the mirror to the factory connect. This will get you blinker on the glass only. That’s the factory function. That’s what you had before. The amber forward shining light behaves as a running light/park light - meaning it comes on when your headlights are on. If you outrun your headlight switch to park lamp mode, that amber would turn but (in a factory state). Your issue is that you’re not setup for tow mirrors. The door harness in your truck is wired different - so there is a path you’ll have to go down to either modify your door harnesses or replace them with a set and … since your truck is as 2014, add additional wiring inside your cabin of your truck that runs into the engine bay/fuse block. So if you want to get these work, it can be done but will require some additional thinks and effort to get there. You can reach me at HarnessDR.com for more info. Use the “Contact Us” option there.

Did you physically inspect the brake pads? When my brakes went bad I got a few different messages, one of which was the same as you did, but none of them said, your brakes are bad (or need attention, or anything like that). I actually took it to the dealer because I thought the system was bad. Nope, just some highly worn brake pads. -

I used to love working on the old stuff. Mostly Chevys, majority Impalas with a few Novas. Usually for improved performance. Once computers and sensors started showing up I lost interest in working on them. I don’t have the patience. Anyone who can pull it off today has to have patience to do the research and can work in a confined area. Has to really enjoy it. The engine compartment is cramped. I’ve enjoyed the show. -
Over the years of having a few in moderation, well almost always. And always fighting my weight Ive tried almost all the brands. Evan Williams takes up the liquor cabinet along side of Fire Ball and blackberry brandy. But in the flavor variety. I’ll admit I love margaritas. But it shows up scale the next day to remind me.

Even tougher is the 5.0 / 302. That's what this one has. https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg https://postimg.cc/4n3F3yzY Just realized I had the airbox removed in the engine pic, lol. -
Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!

I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats. What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before ) Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short. Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.

Bridgestone vs Goodyear tires?
Grumpy Bear replied to Philipgonzales3's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable. Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to. Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like. That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain. Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires. -
