  1. I have a 2014 LT and had all 4 tires wearing severally on the outside edge of the tires. I took pictures and along with a polite letter contacted the tire manufacture. I was asked by the mfg to have an independent tire dealer inspect the tires. The tire dealer agreed that the tires were wearing abnormally and they contacted the tire manufacture. The manufacture agreed and offered me a new set (4) of tires (any tire I wanted as long as it was their brand) at 1/2 price with no install costs. The new tires have worn normally. No, I choose not to identify the US brand of tires. The problem tires were OEM.

  5. Ah so, this concept is not new (but it was to me) and may not apply to my Silverado, yet reading the excellent 'comments' above and doing a 'search' on words like "which new cars need a battery registered" or words like that will provide some useful information (mostly for BMWs, but knowledge is knowledge). Also suggestions like, if you want to skip the registration, at least get a battery as close to the original specs as you can.
  6. Saw this 'article by Consumer Reports' on the Web: https://www.consumerreports.org/car-batteries/how-hot-weather-affects-your-car-battery-what-to-do-about-it/ <cut> In some cases, owners can replace an AGM battery with a flooded one to boost longevity in hot climates, Barron says, but it’s best to consult a mechanic first. Many cars come with AGMs to support an increasing array of electrical components, and the charge system may be configured specifically for the charging needs of the AGM. Cars and their batteries are becoming more capable and sophisticated. This can add complication to the once-simple task of battery replacement. Barron points out that some recent models from Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and others require the battery to be registered by the car, so it can optimize charging and usage. This typically requires a mechanics’ scan tool, a professional-grade device that interfaces with the car’s computer system. Even older vehicles can require some level of reprogramming by a mechanic when a battery is changed to allow all systems to work. Ultimately, this means that many DIYers may find that they need assistance from a professional. <cut>

  9. Push to Talk Button Operation Posted on July 8, 2018 by blogadmin The push to talk button on the steering wheel (Fig. 9) is used to answer an incoming call or activate voice recognition with the infotainment system on some GM models. However, on other models without built-in voice recognition, the push to talk button will only connect to OnStar or the voice recognition of a connected mobile phone. Fig. 9 2018-2019 Sonic, Trax, Terrain; and 2019 Encore, Regal, Camaro, Colorado, Cruze, Equinox, Malibu, Silverado, Canyon and Sierra models equipped with Infotainment 3 systems (RPO IOR) do not have voice recognition capability with the infotainment system. The voice recognition commands are dependent on the phone paired to the vehicle. The push to talk button will answer OnStar hands-free calls. This is normal operation for the IOR infotainment system. In addition, it may appear that USB names cannot be deleted from the infotainment display after a USB drive has been removed from the USB port. The infotainment system displays the last three sources on the audio screen, such as AM, FM, SiriusXM, a Bluetooth device streaming music, or a USB drive. (Fig. 10) The last three sources used will be listed even after the source is removed from the system. The name of a USB drive that was connected will be removed from the audio screen after three other audio sources are selected, such as AM, FM, SiriusXM, etc.
  10. QR Code on Certification Label Offers More RPO Codes http://sandyblogs.com/techlink/?p=9801 Beginning with the 2018 model year, a QR code was added to the Certification label (Fig. 3) on all Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models. The new QR code includes the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), RPO codes and other information that identify the content of the vehicle. In previous model years, the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label, often located in the trunk or glovebox of a vehicle, included this information.

  12. You might consider sending an email to GM. Give them all the info (VIN #, etc) and how you use the truck (drive off-road, city, highway) and ask them what routine you should follow. If they reply, you will then have a written answer should you ever have need of proof.

  14. GM has such a great opportunity to learn from the work/testing done by people like you and so many others responding to this subject, it's a shame they void your warranty rather than contacting your and working with you to help solve this vibration issue. Shame on GM!

  16. JerryCanada, one technique you may want to use with your dealer is to visit the dealer and state 'winter will be here soon along with all the road salt. Are you planning to do the re-coating of my truck BEFORE the salt is put on the roads as I don't want the corrosive salt on my rusted frame?' If they say no permanent fix is available yet, you need to say 'So, you are telling me to go ahead and let the salt get thrown up on my uncoated frame?' The idea is to force them to say yes and 'accept responsibility' for any salt damage because they won't re-coat your frame. Usually the dealer will not want to say they will accept responsibility so they will, reluctantly, agree to do a fix right away and fix it again when the permanent fix is available. While this does not always work, it's worth a try. Should they say 'yes' (they are okay with accepting responsibility) , then ask that person for their full name and let them see you writing that down along with the date and what they said - they may change their mind when they see you documenting what they said.
  17. Updated Nov. 12, 2016 4:17 p.m. ET Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to pay up to about $3.4 billion to settle claims that certain of its trucks and sport-utility vehicles lacked proper rust protection, leading to premature corrosion of vehicle frames. The agreement is a substantial financial setback at a time when the Japanese auto giant’s record-breaking profit streak has slowed in recent quarters as a strong yen dents its performance. The company also is part of a broader group of auto makers facing plateauing retail sales in the profitable U.S. market. The deal, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles this week, settles litigation in two states over problems with Toyota Tacoma trucks from model years 2005 to 2010, Tundras from 2007 to 2008 and Sequoias from 2005 to 2008. Once approved, consumers will be entitled to an inspection of their vehicles and ultimately replacement of its frame if the car is found to have the faulty rust protection. Car owners who already have replaced their frames will also be reimbursed. Court documents peg the cost of inspection to Toyota under the accord at $90 a vehicle and to replace each frame at $15,000.

  19. I don't think he REALLY meant a 'complete' tear down - it's just the underside of the intake valves that need cleaning as with a DI engine there is no gasoline being sprayed to the under side of the valves. Thus the article was that even Top Tier gas does no good in keeping the valves clean when they don't get sprayed in the first place.
  20. With our GDI engines, I thought this post from a senior member on the Corvette member was worth the read as it is a good explanation. My dealer said I should have my valves cleaned about every 25k miles - that's gonna be very expensive (and require a lot of crushed walnut shells). So, has anyone had their valves cleaned? "I've EXCLUSIVELY used Top-Tier gasoline for over a decade, and the research on the benefits is compelling in traditional fuel-injected engines. However, the research is also beginning to show that Top-Tier doesn't prevent the emerging problems of valve deposits on gasoline, direct-injected (GDI) engines, and all the LT engines now are GDI. In fact, the majority of modern engines now are GDI. In traditional port-fuel injection engines, the injectors spray fuel on the valves, and the detergents in Top-Tier fuels do a good job of keeping them clean. In a GDI engine, the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders, by-passing the valves, and the same cleaning effect does not take place. The industry has recognized that new oil and fuel standards are required for GDI engines, and they are under development, but, as of yet, it's not clear what the answer is. Thus, it's questionable that Top-Tier fuel alone can produce the same benefits in our GDI engines. It's a potentially, very large, "ticking time-bomb" w/ many GDI cars showing severe valve deposits relatively early in their lifetimes. Right now, the only solution is removal of the top-end, and mechanical valve cleaning." Last edited by Foosh; 07-10-2016 at 10:43 AM.
  21. Was the alignment done by the dealer, or by the business where you bought the tires?
  22. The Fluid-Film looks good --but check the last sentence below from their site: FLUID FILM is manufactured using an intricate heating and blending process, which combines unrefined woolwax with selective polar agents and corrosion inhibitors, creating a unique, lanolin-based formulation that stops existing rust on contact. Penetrating on contact, it creates a fluid, self-healing barrier that is always active and will not chip or crack, protecting vehicle undercoating's and exposed metals for extended periods of time. Safe for use on all metals, it will stop pitting in chrome, will not harm most paints or plastic, and has exceptional lubricating properties, penetrating to stop squeaks and provide lasting lubricity for all moving parts. Electrically non conductive, FLUID FILM has a high flash point and a thin, flexible composition, making it a perfect protectant for battery terminals and electrical connections. Care should be taken around non oil resistant rubber goods. May cause swelling. Fluid Film may soften some vehicle undercoatings. This includes undercoating type paints. Check with dealer/manufacturer for compatibility.
  23. http://sandyblogs.com/techlink/?p=4689 "GM has begun shipping the CH-51450-A NVH Kit as an essential diagnostic tool to all GM dealerships. Shipments will continue through July 2015. To assemble the NVH diagnostic kit, GM partnered with Pico Technology to develop a GM-specific, 4-channel, PC-based automotive oscilloscope with NVH vibration diagnostics and driveline balancing capabilities. The tool is designed to help identify the slightest chassis & driveline disturbances on today’s increasingly sophisticated vehicle architectures. The CH-51450-A Kit includes a 3-axis accelerometer and interface to provide accurate analysis of vibrations in all directions. Using the display of your existing laptop computer, this system combines fast capture and analysis of vehicle data with a clear easy-to-read presentation of results and actions. Recordings can be captured while on a road test for analysis as well as saved to the laptop’s hard drive for further review back at the dealership. The CH-51450-A Kit contains a 3-axis accelerometer, whereas the original CH-51450 kit includes a single-axis accelerometer." Could this be useful?
  24. " A top tier brand like Shell will have more cleaning additives than a non top tier brand like say Sunoco." Being curious about the value of top tier gas in our DI engines (like gas not cleaning the valves) I contacted Sunoco and asked why they were not top tier - they said they also exceed the amount of additives required by the government (as is required by all top tier gas brands): Sunoco fuels significantly exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gasoline detergency standards. All grades of Sunoco fuel contain the same level of detergent. In addition to government-mandated detergency tests, Sunoco fuels are subject to additional testing by an independent, third-party lab to further ensure their quality. Sunoco fuels contain other additives such as corrosion inhibitors and antioxidants, which help to ensure fuel quality. They also promote a longer “shelf life”, which means the fuel will last longer in between uses. and the list goes on :-) Plus Sunoco has been the NASCAR fuel for year - does that mean anything to us?. But another thing I believe is important is to get fresh fuel - some smaller top tier stations may have a low turn over in sales and the gas sits in their tanks maybe longer than it should - accumulates more condensation too. Ever seen a Sunoco that was not crowded? I'm not selling Sunoco, I contacted them just to see why they were not listed as top tier - they didn't seem to think there was any reason to pay for the designation (cost about $20k or so to get tested by the top tier folks). So, I believe Sunoco is probably just as good as a top tier brand, or at least an ok fuel to use in out DI engines. Plus they sell 87, 89, 91 and 93 octanes - most other stations only sell 3 levels - if that makes any difference :-)
