Adding Puddle Lights

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have an 09 Silvy. and I was just wondering if anyone had added mirrors w/ puddle lights to their GMT900. I already have the DL3 mirrors and wanted to know if the lights would just be plug and play. If not no big deal but I had them on my older trucks and thought they were neat. I searched the fourm and didn't find anything! Thanks for any input.

you can swap mirrors out with that of a 'burb or 'hoe or yukon. from what ive read earlier in this same forum is that even the denali's don't come with puddle lights. i could be wrong about the models listed but you can search on ebay for them.

I added DL3 mirrors w/puddle lights to my Sierra. The puddle light wires are two orange w/white wires. I ran one to ground. I ran one wire (power) from the dome light (just jammed the wire between the bulb and the clip; the side that faces the front of the truck). I did this by trial and error. Three wires go to the dome light (red, black, and dark gray). I initially tapped off the red wire but the puddle lights were on all the time. Then I jammed the power wire to one side of the light clip (the back side of the light) and it was on all the time. When I tried the front side it worked. If I go into the dome light fixture again I will tap off the gray wire ( I think that is the right one). My puddle lights go on when I use the key fob to unlock the truck and dim when it times out. So any time the dome lights go on the puddle lights are on, weather it is manual or automatic.

Puddle lights? Enlighten me please. (pun intended)

The DL3 mirrors I got off ebay most likely from a Tahoe or Yukon have a light built in underneath the mirror on the housing. It illuminates the side of the truck and ground where you would step just prior to entering your truck, hence puddle lights, to ensure you don't step into something nasty. I am guessing not all DL3 mirrors have these?

Yeah thats correct, in 04 they stopped putting them on the pickups. Only in 04-07 Classic you could add them simply plug and play. On the 07-09 I'm not sure.

I put the Escalade Style Mirrors on my 07 which had the DL3 Mirrors to begin with.....on my truck the Puddle Lights were plug and play!

I have a 05 and added the puddle/turn lights/fold, it was a plug/play install, I can say I never seen/notice the puddle lights work, turn lights and fold work fine, do you need something set in the dash control, I have my inside light set to come on when you click to enter and stay on a little bit when you leave, I don't have my headlights set to stay on when you leave the truck or come on when you click/enter

thanks

If I remember correctly on my 05 the puddle lights worked with the perimeter lights, so when you unlock the truck at night with the key fob they should come on. That is if you have them set to come on. The same goes for your headlights when you turn the ignition off. Depending on the amount of time your headlights stay on that is how long your puddle lights should stay on. Like you said if you don't have them set on a delay after you turn the ignition off they will not come on. If you have the DIC on you steering wheel you can adjust it through there.
