Diesel Truck Owners/buyers Issue

I am in the market for a new 09 , 2010 diesel truck for business and as a personal truck. I could not belive the MPG that I have been seeing and was getting on an over the weekend test drive. well as you all know the newer trucks have to have a particulate filter or "DPF" and a cat converter plus a muffler. That DPF is killing diesels on power plus MPG. The efficiency of the diesel motor is what makes it a better choice for some of us. So all of the new milage requirements and push for better milage is only for everyone but diesel truck buyers. For us, they have made it worse. What is more important, better milage or less polution, I dont think all of the global warming theories can even be proven. Plus if a new diesel truck got 30 plus mpg, that alone would create less refinery production needs, save oil, and cut back on drilling and that would create less pollution as well as save oil. Cutting back on oil dependance and usage is the whole reason these idoits are driving around in cars that look like a shoe and are no bigger that a 2500HD's door. could you imagine hitting one of those roller skates in any HD truck, I see people even driving thier kids around in those tiny cars, smiling like they are just saving the world. Not me I would take my kids in an M-1 Abrams tank but they dont have a DPF. not to mention all the "stuff" the EPA is requiring on new diesel trucks has raised the price of the diesel option so high it is almost not worth the price to buy new. I was reading an article in the latest copy of Diesel World magazine titled EPA vs. MPG it said in Europe diesel cars get 50 mpg. Seems the U.S. wants to choke the diesel motor on diesel pick-ups so bad they are not economical anymore. Consumers want buy and the manufactures will phase them out. I read by 2016 with the current administration, the diesel "pick-up" not "big truck" will be gone. what do you guys think. I know this was a long winded post but, I am pissed. what can we do? What do you think? :rollin:

"They" are the environmentalists. "They" could have more impact on the nation's economy than any other group. "They" are having a field day with the current Administration and Congress. With all the distractions in the world, Obamacare, Obamaconomy, Obamaganistan, etc. It's probably scary what laws are being pushed through right now with no one looking.

These ding dongs are so stinking numb its unbelievable. I don't know the exact numbers, but you get the concept. How is getting 15mpg in a truck that could easily get 25 good for the environment? Hopefully the aftermarket can find some ways to get around this stuff.

If I were you, I would be looking for a nice 08. And send a letter to your Congressperson that you bought used instead of new because of these ridiculous regulations. And send a copy to the big O. Maybe he'll have you over for beer.

The sky is not falling on either global warming or with the current administrations proposed policies.

2COR517, Amen my friend you also see what I am seeing. In that article in "Diesel World" (Oct 2009 edition) the author, Kevin Wilson is writing about the fact that the EPA was actually at the SEMA show and were personally warning aftermarket manufacturers not to supply or provide information to end users on the DPF delete kits. What the? and they just now figured out how to make the software work to keep the truck operational after removal of the DPF. That DPF is about the dumbest thing ever. Why dont they start with just the Goverment diesel vehicles all buses, big trucks, and even heavy equipment. That might make them feel warm and fuzzy, and could even tell everyone about the efforts being made to save the world. That could even go along with the publications and press releases showing how the "Oministration" is currently down sizing our Military and all of the order cancelations on the F-22 Raptors. Lockheed Martin, builder of the F-22 will just sell those 50 planes to other countries. I saw that on the news the same day as "North Korea launches a new ICBM" awe it was for the much needed nucular power program, all of the others use em. Plus all the money we are just handing out instead of paying our global debts, we will need those planes and tanks etc. when everyone come to collect. Like a giant world leader bookie

Tell that to the guys who have been laid off for over a year with no work in sight. Obvioulsy, you have gotten the wool pulled over your eyes to not see what is going on right in front of your face.

What do Obama's policies have to do with people that were put out of work more than one year ago? On global warming, this is happening. BUT, you need to ignore the 10-15% of the people on both ends of it. The ones in complete denial and the ones who say the sky is falling.

Too many people, politicions, and industries, have had to be dragged kicking and screaming towards doing the right thing. They said it can't be done, we can't afford it. There has been hundreds of millions of dollars spent to oppose enviromental regulation. But we are better off with these things, than without.

I hope I'm not the only one who remembers the end of the 60s and 70s, the brown clouds hanging over our big cities from the smog. We don't have that today, the people in China and Mexico do. I also rember the horrible early emission controls on cars. The cars and trucks today though, Are better, cleaner, faster, more reliable, and more fuel efficient with few exceptions, than ever.

You don't have to like the current diesel regs, but I can't help but think we have people smart enough, to come up with better systems. At the end of the 70s they said V-8s would soon be gone. If that was true, why do we have V-10 Vipers, ZR 1 Corvettes, Shelby Mustangs. They're here because they figured out how to build them inspite of regulation.

Besides my truck, I have an 01 Corvette Z-51 6-speed. It's capable of low 13s in the 1/4 and 30+ mpg on the highway. All this and being legal too. It sure beats those 4cyl Mustang IIs and 150 HP 1980 Corvetts that drove lousey.

Sorry for the ramble, but John Mccain even voted to kill funding for the Plane.

My current '08 truck (and I've owned a lot of them in the past 50 years) is the best one I've ever had. Ugly as a truck, pulls like a team of Clydesdales and rides like a thoroughbred. And I bought it when a Republican was president.

Interesting thread. It's going to get a lot worse. Gore and his growing number of international followers have successfully convinced way too many in hollywood and governments around the world with misleading and exaggerated CO2 data that CO2 is causing climate change. (btw, Gore stands to profit substantially if Cap and Tax...er....trade goes through)

Tailpipe emissions aren't going to get much cleaner but they'll still emit CO2. There have been laws introduced in some states to tax vehicles based on CO2 emissions. It's kind of funny we're actually getting worse mileage because of all the aftertreatments. More fuel burned means more CO2 in the air, aftertreatment can't scrub it.

I want someone who traded in a Yukon or Tahoe who thinks that they are saving the world to buy a little car or is now driving a smart car (shoe) to join in

kinda off topic here, but do these trucks have a switch to let you choose when you have the re-gen cycle? last month i drove a 2007 Kenworth straight truck (34k gvwr) and it had a switch that said DPF on it, i didnt push is because it was a rental and i didnt want to mess it up lol. i drove this truck probably close to 1000 miles over 3 days, mostly stop and go driving and didnt notice anything weird, like a re-gen cycle. just wondering if pickups have a switch so you can control it? no, im not in the market for one now or in the future, just curious about them

now: really off topic

BTW, for yall talking about the new environmental regs, imo, they are complete horseshit(not just talking about diesel trucks here) but these new regs will basically finish off any and all industrial production we have left here. what company will pay big $$$$ for "pollution permits" or to upgrade their facilities when they can just send it to mexico/china? i look at it this way, politically 1 side is trying to regulate any business that produces anything out of existance"so it doesnt hurt the environment". The other side wants to put a big for sale sign on it so they can pocket some cash at the expense of the average American if the company gets shipped over seas in the process.

Im a 20 year old college student, hopefully i will graduate in a couple years and get a decent job in my profession. I want the America i live in as an adult to be the same thing that my parents and grandparents and great-grandparents got and that i have experienced up until now: a country where you can work hard and succeed with out a boat load of gov't regs. everytime I see the news i see things about our leadership that disturbe me more and more. tons of epa regs on everything, the environmentalist movement, "smart thermostats and power grid" etc. 20 years from now will i be living in a cramped house( with the thermostat set to a gov't approved temp), driving a tiny car, and paying 75% of my income in taxes??? why do these people seem to want us to live in facilities on par with those in India (tiny apt's, the Tata nano etc)?? What is going on now is exactly the opposite of what i have seen in my life until thsi point. Present and historic America= work hard, get a decent job and you can afford a good house, car/truck/suv, etc. the future America= work hard(if you can find a job) and you can afford a small house, maby a small car, and you will struggle to afford anything above the basic necessities due to extreme taxes on any consumable good "for the sake of the environment" this goes against everything i have seen in my life and is not right. Of course, after they cut the Military out to pay for Obamacare, there might not be any America left to live in.

now back to diesel trucks :P

It interesting to read all the comments regarding emission controls on the duramax. I have contacted several GM dealers in a Canadian city (pop 1Million +) to get their opinion on installing an egr blocker on my duramax lly. Very few have ever heard of such a thing and most will not comment on its effectiveness. Most will not recommend as they say polution controls have been built into the engine to meet environmental specs.

I do not believe global warming is occurring. Refer to www.icecap.us and get the best info. Here in Canada, our governments are going the popular route, ie: the British Columbia govt. has instituted a carbon tax on all emissions from burning fossil fuels. They did it because they believed that 80% of the polulation believed that global warming was occuring and that CO2 was the cause.

I have sign on the back of my pickup that reads, MY CARBON FOOTPRINT IS BIGGER THAN YOURS, AND MY PLANTS LOVE IT.

If any of you have any info aboutthe egr blocker, please send it onward.
