2009 Silverado Power Steering Leak

Recommended Posts

Well  I have another issue with my 2009 silverado 5.3 6 speed. Climbed under the truck to set myself up for an oil change and noticed that I have power steering fluid on my steering rack. The fluid is below the steering shaft on the driver side. Some of the fluid was caked up with dirt and some was clean fluid and colorless.

Any clue what this could be? I checked the fluid and it is not over filled and I didnt over turn the steering wheel.

Little help

Thanks

My new 2009 has the same leak, as well as the other new 2009 I drove for 1,000 miles. Same exact leak in the same place. I'm going to try to check it out this weekend to see if I can fix it and cancel my appontment for Wednesday. If I end up taking it to them, I can post what they find out here.

My 09 has a leaky rack also. It's not leaking bad and I really don't want to go in for service already, its too frustrating a process. If you find it's an easy fix, please post the solution.

Warranty?? Hell let them spend the time to figure it out and fix it and not waste your time...lol

+1...couldn't understand why they were going to go digging around on an '09. It's under warranty.

Because if it is something as simple as a line needing to be snugged down, it will save me from dropping it off, catching a ride to work, catching a ride back to the dealer, missing an hour's work, and chancing them replacingthe entire steering rack (and chance screwing something up) just to give a mechanic hours.

You guys unemployed, or live next to a dealer?

Dropping it off in the morning. I will let you know what they say.

Likely I will get:

"We couldnt find anything wrong but its documented."

BS

Back when my vehicles had warranties the dealer would give me a loaner vehicle whenever I had my vehicle in having work done plus they were open till like 10pm or midnight. Maybe they don't do that anymore, but it made it pretty un-troublesome for me. Plus I live in a pretty populated area, so I guess it could be a hassle if you live out in BFE miles and miles away from a dealer, but Festus isn't that far from nowhere...lol

It sounds like they have a faulty part. Maybe they found a cheap supplier in China that uses cheap seals?

Considering my two trucks were built at different assembly plants, I'd say it is a defect in the rack itself. I guess we'll find out.

I'm sure they'd give me a loaner if they were keeping it overnight.

I just don't understand how you folks don't see the value in taking 10 minutes to look at somehting yourself. I do all my maintenence on my other cars, am a FAA A&P, and am perfectly capable of checking lines to see if they're tight. If that'll save me the hassle of dropping it off, then cool. If not, I'll leave it with them to fix. WTF is so wrong about that?

I'm with ya on this one shoddy. If I could charge the dealer for my time that they waste, they'd be much more efficient. I'll be crawling under there for a look at the same leak thing this weekend, while doing oil on my schedule.

Frankly I have lost all confidence in any and all service departments. If I can figure out the problem well at least I know it is being done correctly. It is a shame that most service departments dont care as long as they punch the time card.

I will keep you updated,
